Grading Ike Dollars PCGS vs NGC

Anyone have an opinion, based on past experience, of how
NGC stacks up to PCGS on grading MS65 and up Ike dollars??

I would say....sometimes they are right onimage...but sometimes they are a little "softer".
In my experiences of trying to cross an NGC Ike to PCGS....only about 30% cross.
My average crossing from ANACS is a little better....maybe 40%.

I have a 71 PCGS ms-65 that looks like it was in my pocket for a year, Ican't imagine anyone being softer on a grade

Are you saying PCGS is "soft" on grading high-end clad Ikes?

Not my area, but I looked through a group of 40-50 MS65 Ike's one time graded by both PCGS & NGC. IMO, NGC was a little less strict on luster and surface chatter for the grade. Those wide open fields, low relief design and large size coins leave lots of opportunities for dings, scrapes and rubs to occur.

There is no comparison. NGC's grades are consistently half point to one point higher than PCGS grades, IMHO. The cross-over rate is very low for Ike dollars from NGC holders to PCGS holders in my knowledge and from my experience.

I would have to say that most MS NGC Ike Dollars are overgraded with some exceptions. I just recently sold a couple of 1971 D NGC MS66 Ikes that were actually MS66 which was amazing. I have seen plenty of MS65 NGC Ikes that looked 63/64. PCGS is pretty accurate in the grading. Though, I have seen some MS67 Clad Ikes in the registry that have plenty of chatter to holder in the MS66/65+ range.

I will say that both NGC and PCGS suck in grading proof Ike Dollars. I have had plenty of proof Ikes that do not deserve the PR69 grade. ANACS is much better at giving the correct grade on Proof Ikes which are usually PR67. It seems I had to sift through many proof Ikes in PCGS and NGC to get an accurate PR69.

I was the buyer of one of those Ikes. Outside of a obverse tic this Ike actually has MS67 attributes. The reverse is as close to pure flawless as I've yet to see on a clad Ike.

    Braddick,

You are right about the MS67 attributes. I was glad you purchased that one. The other one was a Low MS66 but still an MS66. Are you going to try to see if it will cross at MS67 at PCGS? Let me know if you do and if it crosses. I am sure I will kick myself if it does. image

The reason why I am not submitting anymore coins is because 3-4 months wait time is too long at PCGS. I decided to sell what I do not want to collect anymore and other items is becuase I am deploying overseas again.

I won't be submitting it to PCGS as I like it just as it is. It's an honest to goodness MS66+ but just not quite a 67. I originally bought it for resell but once I saw it decided to add it to my collection.

I just got NGC grades back on a small batch of Ikes.....Got two good ones:

    71-D in 67
    72-P TYPE 3 in 66

I'll be tickled pink if EITHER one crosses!image

I have had two NGC 1976 Type 2 MS66 and one NGC 1971-D MS66 coins cross to PCGS. I also had one NGC 1977 MS67 and one NGC 1976 type 2 MS66 that didn't cross. Based on my limited experience, I think NGC grades slightly easier than PCGS. I have also wondered which coin would be worth more, a clad Ike that grades NGC MS66 or a clad Ike that grades PCGS MS65? In other words, would it be worthwhile to submit high end PCGS MS65 clad Ikes's to NGC in the hopes of an upgrade to MS66?

And if it works why send them anywhere else?

In other words; if a 71 Ike in PCGS 64 sells for $20 and in NGC 65 sells for $70, and a 71-D Ike in PCGS 65 sells for $15 and in NGC 66 sells for $40, and a 72 Ike in PCGS 64 sells for $25 and in NGC 65 sells for $100 etc.; why send to PCGS in the first place? Just wondering.image

Well from what you just said MrR and the new prices of grading at PCGS. Why bother slabing, sell them raw a make money rather than giving it to PCGS. Your sell prices are less than grading fees.

Doing better with NGC than raw though. image
