newb?- loose change

I hope I phrase this so it doesn't sound too stupid, but, what do you guys or girls look for in you loose change. I have seen post on here of people going to the bank and buying bags or rolls of coins. I realize that it takes years maybe decades to learn all about coins so could everyone just tell me what they specifically look for. If I get any SBA then I keep it or half dollar. Are you looking for double dies? I'm sorry for the stupid question. I have waited a couple of months to think of a better way to ask but there isn't one.

if you dont have one already, buy the yeoman book on us coins.
its called the red book cause its red i guess but its a great starter
book to see whats what, how many were made, a rough grading guide
for any us coin and a ballpark price guide to help value your coins.

when you get fancy you can buy the ANA grading guide for us coins.
another must-have for the coin collector.
not to mention the gazillion websites on coins which can be extremely
    helpful.
