what's the reimbursement process when you find a fake in a psa holder?

i've been thoroughly reviewing my psa collection the past couple of weeks b/w the wigwam scam popping up again on the boards, and a couple of really questionable psa/dna purchases on ebay ...call it my psa midlife crisis, or davalillo reincarnate if you'd like. but after remembering a thread on the boards last year and re-reading a beckett article, i realized for a fact i have 3 psa 10 1988 emmitt smith bk cards that are the type II fakes. they've got the logo..but are missing the registered trademark sign. needless to say i know psa is supposed to pay you fair market value for an erroneously encapsulated card, but this particular one isn't even in smr and the couple that sold in the last couple months have ranged from $150-350 each. i can't help but think if i just call psa tell them i think my cards are bogus and i want $1000 from them, not only are they're going to try and deny any fallability, they're going to laugh at me. has anyone done this before??????

on another note, anybody ever deal with zardoz 51? i bought all three from him, and only remember b/c i was so surprised how he managed to double the population report in one submission when i bought them from him....resulting in very reasonable prices due to him flooding the market. i think he used to read these boards and would probably be very helpful in getting to the heart of this issue, but i think he's got a different ebay name than he does message board name.

here's an old message board thread which discussed the issue and linked the beckett article to the counterfeits. old message board thread

I would hate to see you get banned for eluding to a potential event that you are alleging to be one thing but that others may allege to be something else. This is not an open, public forum. PSA owns this forum, owns your account, and has the capacity to take your account away for purporting that they've done something that they have not admitted to doing. I would suggest calling Charlie in Customer Service to clear this up.....err, I mean Peter Ma, err, I mean that kid that picks up the phone when you call.

After re-reading your post, I didn't notice the question about zardoz the first time around. I would generally say that he is one of the good guys of the world, and if you got something from him, odds are it is legit. In fact - some people even consider him to be an attest expert on certain matters.

He's a good guy, I'd stake my reputation on it.

Just call PSA customer service and tell them your problem with a possible erroneous encapsulation. Say you researched it and know for certain it is a counterfeit card. They should give you fair market value. Do you live in California? If you don't you might have to send it in, but make sure you scan those cards thoroughly so no one can say they never existed in case that issue comes up.

Zardoz51 is a trustworthy guy. He has been busy the last few months because he is taking care of his mother and his son had an accident as well. He likes the boards, but his attention is needed elsewhere. I don't have his contact info, but with the problem you have, I think dealing with PSA is all you need.

There was a case with the counterfeit 1985 Topps Mark McGwire and PSA did reimburse every one that had possession of it.

  • thanks guys, i'll call on monday. I'm not making a PRO sale accusation. i'm pretty laid back, nobody's perfect, mistakes happen, etc. grading millions of cards a year i was just curious what others have done....as alll those slabs can't be error proof. if psa is good about owning up to mistakes it can only strengthen their credibility, in my opinion. i'd just like to have a strong and hopefully amicable approach planned out before i proceed.

***edit***i've received a couple pm's and would like to clarify i didn't intend to infer that zardoz51 intentionally sold anything illegitimate. I was just curious as to the history of the cards that were holdered, which would likely either disprove the beckett article, or help avoid a possible loss on my part. v/r

  • Duner,

I think you may be mistaken in terms of who you purchased the cards from. Did you purchase the counterfeit Burger King cards from eBay user ID "vintageauctions"?
