Am I silly for collecting more modern coinage?

I would agree to an extent that this may be silly in that these coins probably won't gain much in value and there are so many of them. I was thinking of starting a modern nickel collection from 1999 up. How about Kennedys? Maybe this will be just for fun but I like nice gem BU coins more as compared to more scarce fine coins without much eye appeal. Any recomendations besides do it or don't do it?

You're never silly for collecting what you enjoy. Kennedys suck, though. Don't waste your money.

  • Hedger,
I collect old gold and, are you ready for this - Eisenhowers

If you like it, go for it - there is no right or wrong

  • Hedger,

I personally enjoy collecting the old and the new! I have modern sets such as ASE, Sacs, SBA, IKEs as well as Saints, Morgan's & Peace Dollars.

So to echo what's been said, go with what you like!
  • Not if thier Lincoln Cent, can't go wrong thier!!!!!
  • Thanks guys. I feel much better now. BTW, I posted this topic mainly to soothe my inner feelings toward modern coins since I started a Kennedy set and a state quarters set. Though some of the quarters in my opinion are not that artistic I will still enjoy the thrill of collecting them. I think the bison nickel will be heavily collected next year and I would like a modern version of the bison.

Hello Hedger, when I started collecting as a kid (age 8), I got frustrated that I could not afford coins I needed. I always asked myself why my grandfather or grandmother did not save at least one coin of each (not counting gold) denomination. I know now that that was alot of money back then. Back to the subject, I have just completed a set of kennedys (including the 98S Matte), I am about to complete a lincoln cent set (up to 2004), only one missing are some of the modern proofs, just also completed 2 BU franklin set including proofs from 1956, finished my walker set a while ago in nice VF-BU, and I do have a set of Ikes and more. Point is 'what do you want to do' ? Are the coins for you? Are you looking for a profit in the future? Are you possibly thinking of the grandkids (if you have any and you possibly might)? It's up to you and I must say the complete Kennedy set looks mmmmmm good. Collect what you like, read the books and don't throw 'stupid' money at anything modern as the one you're looking at is not the last one out there. Just for the record....I'm 52...........Rick

  • You should collect whatever makes you happy to look at and think about!

  • Collect absolutely whatever you like. You're the one that has to enjoy the collection. I need the 95 Kennedy silver proof to complete my Kennedy set that includes the 98 Silver Matte! And, I like the set and enjoy showing it off!image

Okay... I about fell outta my chair on that one Russ...

Just a couple of questions... why a modern nickel collection from 1999 and up? Why 1999? If you feel like that's a good date to start with, that's great... just wondering your opinion. Also, what's your long-term goal for this? a registry set or for fun?

Also, just to state my opinion... a nice shiney new nickel may look nice, but I'll take all the mint state 1965-1970 5+step coins "without much eye appeal" you can find.

I know it's redundant, but collect what you enjoy!

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • these coins probably won't gain much in value and there are so many of them. I was thinking of starting a modern nickel collection from 1999 up.

Not so. I collect gold and high-grade business strikes, including MS68-69 moderns, and rest assured it's not "silly" collecting them, as some of them can be tough in the higher grades (mint sets and rolls have atrocious quality control). I readily concede these are "conditional" rarities and will never be considered truly rare coins, and I do consider them third-class citizens when compared with gold coins or truly rare pieces. But I enjoy having pristine slabbed coins that we use every single day in regular commerce, and it sounds as though you do, to.

And if you like nickels, why not try to build a collection of MS68-MS69s with the FS designation? That is an endeavor that could take years, since the quality of modern nickels is terrible. Heck, you may never be able to do it, but the challenge would be fun, I think.

In any event, here's a recent post about the value of some moderns from the 70s and 80s. Nothing silly about those hammer prices.

    Hedger,

Nah, now collecting early gold would be silly.

wanted to quote that last reply... but it didn't work somehow...

Lets talk price for a second... Mr or Mrs Hedger... shall we?

In regards to Jefferson Nickels... would you believe that a 2004 Jefferson Nickel sold recently for the ballpark of $2000? How about a 1996-P, currently with a price of $750 on the BST board? I could list a number of prices, but something tells me, you might not think that these coins could be expensive, which is exactly what I thought when I first got into them. Boy, was I wrong and I think, you might be too.

    Steve

I wish I had my price guide with me at work... people who don't collect this series have no idea what these coins have been selling for this year... and PCGS doesn't either with their price guide... it is totally wrong.

But, just like everybody else has been saying... collect what you like. I hope you enjoy it... cause it's your money your spending. image

Collect what you like. I just finished a raw set of roosies tonight. Received the last 2 in the mail today from
a fellow board member. They are not registry quality, but I like em and that is what is important to me. I also have have walker, franklin, and kennedy halves. Ikes, sba's, and sac's. I also have other raw sets going, but my big love is Statehoods and I have what I feel is a nice registry set going. Its not the best, but its coming right along. I have probably spent way too much on these but its what I can afford in high end grades. Who knows, I may make some money on em later, but if I don't I have had a lot of fun. Met some nice people, and know the thrill of sniping a few of these in the last seconds of auction!image Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy the coins!!!

I agree--after all, some people collect barf bags!
  • Collect what you enjoy is good advice.

BTW, I love your avatar Hedger. I saw it on someone's username here and ended up getting one of those Neptune coins.

  • What they all said... I'm building a couple of sets (including Jeffs of course) but I like some of the recent stuff, and there have already been reports of Keelboat errors (check varietynickels.com). The whole point is to collect what you're interested in, so go for it. image
