The San Francisco Giants star testified a year ago before a grand jury that has indicted four people in an alleged steroid distribution ring. Bonds admits he used a clear substance and a cream that was supplied to him by his trainer, but he didn't know the substances contained steroids.
Bonds' attorney is claiming the slugger believed these substances to be 'ego-enhancers' and was only trying to further admiration towards himself. "The world loves Mr. Bonds, he took these enhancers so he could love himself just as much."
Bonds has been suspected of steroid use for quite some time although no positive tests have proven the accusations. He did greatly increase his body weight and power hitting as he aged in a way that is usually not consistent with athletes as they age. Though it has been noted Bonds' head has increased in size by nearly 2 inches. This could be the results of an actual ego-altering chemical. This could assist in athlete's defense.
Bonds may pass both Ruth and Aaron in 2005 but now the question is, did he hit the home runs fairly? How much does the alleged steroid use, whether intentional or not, detract from the significance of Bonds' accomplishment. If these substances are actually ego-enhancing chemicals such as Bonds suggests, then this could place an asterisk after Bonds' name on MLB's all time jerk list .

That's why they call that substance the "clear".
