GIANT coin

My girlfriend brought this home today. A friend of hers had mentioned it and Kim told her that I was into coins. It naturally progressed into me getting to sort through dozens of this lady's coins to "appraise" them for her lol. Had some fun going through it...no rarities at all. Only two items worth mentioning are for novelty value...a 1943 Walking Lib. 50¢ that was gold plated many many years ago (quite humorous looking) and this coin. The thing is just MASSIVE (over 1/4 inch thick looks like) and I've never seen it before. Do you all know anything about it, was it a commem. or was this dinner plate of a coin meant for circulation? lol

  • It's one of the largest silver coins in existence. It's odd that Panama also issued one of the smallest silver coins ever minted in 1904 - the Panama Pill. Check out my icon!

How much do these things go for? Am I right in guessing it's value is pretty much just silver melt?

  • I just paid $39.95 for a Gem Brillant Proof from Coast to Coast Coins. I couldn't resist it in DMPL. Perhaps I ought to get three more so I can use them for "coasters" image

I have sold several of the proofs on eBay in their original mint issued boxes for $25 to 35. They also had boxes of (10) BU coins that were very popular (and still are) with silver collectors. image

Their value appears to be tied closely to melt, which is about $25 right now, but the mintages are pretty low. Maybe they'll be worth more in the future.
