Please keep your eyes open STOLEN COIN!

I searched the forum for a stolen coin registry, but didn't find anything of substance. If you have any info about where else I could list this coin to get more exposure, please reply to this thread. This coin was stolen from the mail- please keep your eyes open for this one. I sent the coin on approval to a long time friend, priority, insured, with signature confirmation. Lo and behold the coin never got delivered. The insurance will cover the price I paid for the coin, but no where near the real value. Please contact me if you have any information about this coin, or happen to see it for sale in any venue. I have all of the appropriate paperwork to prove purchase and ownership. You can contact me by email at travis_prim@hotmail.com. Here are the details:

Coin: 1917D PCGS MS64 Buffalo Nickel
Cert # 3935.64/21769226
Distinguishing marks: 3 1/2 leg variety
Mailed: November 23rd from USPS in Cumming GA 30040. Destination was FL

you didn't insure it valuewise as a 3.5 legger????

I once had a priority insured coin take a month!!!!!!!!!!!!! The USPS here gave me flack about giving me a refund on the shipping so I filed a complaint on the matter comparing them to the Pony Express. I got my money back within days.image

Buffnut, I know it is too late on this coin, but please take my advice when shipping coins in the future. I see this coin is valued at well over $1000. The postage on your package had to be over $16, and with that much postage and a blue insurance sticker, it was a beacon for theft in the system. In the future whenever you send a valuable coin like this, only ship it via registered mail.
  • I second the encouragement to use registered-insured mail. I contacted the ANA about help with recovering stolen coins recently and Chris Cipoletti put me on to someone who tries to help. I'm sorry I didn't save the email or name,... it was a while ago.

  • Yes- hindsight is 20/20. I have definitely learned an extremely expensive lesson- to the tune of about $4900 in profit down the tubes. From now on it will be registered mail only!
  • I ship cheap stuff insured green or blue (value)

My personal or good stuff is registered only !

By the way, you CAN insure it for the value it's worth even if you paid substantially less for it. You need proof of value, which could come in the form of a greysheet or if you have sent the coin on approval as you stated, you could insure it for the value you had agreed upon. So proof of value could come in the form of a written agreement to buy/sell or even an email.

Years ago the PO tried that "cost coverage" crap on me. I had insured for market value and paid the market insurance premium.

I called my congressman and had full payment within 2 weeks of providing a couple letters from dealers confirming the REAL value.
