I almost completed a set last year - still need just a few - the set wasn't bad but the autos were just OK.
The design on the inserts was, again, OK - nothing to get excited about. This years design is better and after all, it has Bonds! Are you buying any?

You do know that Helio is referring to Bowman Heritage here? Was not very popular with board people last year. I did some trading with Basilone but that's about the extent of it.
edit: Ryan, I was reading the ad which references Bowman Heritage but I think he is preselling the TH.

    That's a great looking card.

I wonder if they're going to misalign the name box on someone's card like they did for Ted Williams back in the day? If I worked at Topps I would have encouraged them to do so. Which player? Bonds would be a good match for all kinds of reasons, I guess.

OK, a few comments here, first off...did the guy have the wrong year on that product? To my knowledge
there hasn't been a 2004 bowman heritage yet. Are they skipping it? This is usually a late year release and
usually hits all the key rookies. Are they making it 2005 because that is the only way to get Bonds into it?

It looks like topps is not going to bring us Bonds autograph cards. Wouldn't that be an easy way to sell
a bunch of product....put a Bonds autograph on the front of the sales flier? I guess they are testing
the waters here.....why spend maga money on Bonds sigs when you might be able to sell this with just
    Bonds base card?

I think Ill be saving my money...and whats with the Feb release date? Thats mighty close to heritage isn't
it? The last thing anyone wants to do is compete with topps heritage around the same time!

This has NOT been a good year for topps as far as quality control. Im sure many of the hardcores remember some
nasty looking 04 heritage...bowman draft was a complete mess...topps actually had to go back to the
    printers.

As a hardcore heritage collector Im looking for a few upgrades here. First the collation has to me MUCH better.
Pulling 15 of one guy and 1 of the other isn't fun. Second, lose the printer marks and bad centering. Nothing
like having to go back through your sets and try to find cards better than 80/20...especially short prints. Thirdly
give us what we want on the auto checklist...everyone is in this set..Mays, Snider, Aaron.....you now have
exclusives with Arod and Bonds....reward us and put them in there and follow that great rule you all had
in 2001......a flat odds for autos......everyone signs the same amount..chances of pulling a Willie Mays
auto is the same as pulling a Joe Mays auto.

I love heritage but Im just waiting for topps to screw this up...good thing these sets are easy sells down the
    road.

Here is to a great heritage year in 2005!

duh, I just re-read your first post, yes it is screwed up..the pic is from 2005 topps heritage but the
write up is from 2004 bowman heritage.

You are correct...it is 2004 Bowman Heritage that is coming out...last years with the 56 Bowman design - the set that never was...released as a 2003 product.

I just scanned the ebay listing - the guy has me all confused - I would guess he is talking about the release date of TH since the release date for Bowman is Dec 22? I believe

I think the cards look like the 1988 Topps Big...anyone want a few boxes of that garbage? :-)
As much as I like the Heritage stuff...I just cant say Im overly impressed....I wonder if that is why they are using the black border and not the white...because they will look like the Big's.
And again, here we go with Black borders....grrrrrr....they look sharp but just something else to make putting together a minty set a pain in the a$$
  • BasiloneBasilone Posts: 2,492 ✭✭

They will ruin the product if they use black borders. Maybe the Bonds card is an example of the the Black Retro-Fractor parallel. IMO...I do not think "Topps Big" had that big of a nationwide appeal for Topps to stray away from this cash cow.

Topps hit some duds this year..especially with their $30 per pack buy back auto set for 80's semi-stars (at best).

I'm sure that the Bonds is a black-border parallel or the picture was cropped down for some reason. 2004 Bowman Heritage is due around 12/22/04. Earlier this year, Topps Heritage came out around 2/19, same as past years, so I'm guessing a similar release date coming up. There are several ebay dealers who are calling 2004 Bowman Heritage (the TV set set) a 2005 release, which is simply an error on their part. This seller is just confused.

I'm hopefully going to get some Bowman Heritage for Christmas, but I don't think I'll be ripping boxes like TH. I may want to collect the "mahogany parallel" depending on what it is exactly. Actual wood borders? If it's just a color variation, then probably not, but there's no info yet. I may just buy a complete set and save box money for Topps.

GCX has the early checklist scanned in, and I'm happy to see Billy Butler's name on it. Drafted by the Royals last year, he is rated as having the best raw power in the draft, and did pretty well in his pro debut. I was wondering when he was going to start appearing on cards, since he wasn't in the late season rookie sets. Kinsler's there, too. Dibs on the black refractors.

Is Butler in the Bowman or Topps Heritage set?

Butler's first cards look like they'll be 2005 Topps Chrome I or Topps Heritage.

  • I thought there was an A Rod sample that was posted in the past few weeks that had a white border.

Last year's Heritage was the first time I had purchased more than 1 pack of current stuff in a long time. But the '56 design with the full picture in the background (as opposed to filler color) is really tempting.

Im sure someone will ring the bell when the cards start appearing at the Targets and Walmarts?

Edit: I looked it up. It was from a post from Joe Stalin (who else?) a couple of weeks ago. It looks loaded with neat autographs (including Eisenhower?). But the cards themselves look great and do have white borders.
