VAM 44?

I just joined the forum and this is my second post. This club is quite fun.

Got home from work today and had a coin in the mail that I had purchased from Ebay. 7/8 1878 Morgan. Seller maintains it is VAM 3 in his ad. I am not sure.

I looked at it closely; it may be a VAM 44. Unfortunatley my VAM encyclopedia fell apart; the new one has not arrived yet.

This coin has at least doubling on the cotton boll and the leaf; may be tripple can't tell. The coint is mid Mint state. Has 5 feathers under 7.

The question, if anyone can look it up, is there an 1878 P VAM that has doubling of cotton boll and leaf, along with numerous stars and the entire E PLURIBUS and LIBERTY? Maybe it is not a VAM 44. I had one years ago and sold it (yeah I am an idiot) so can't refer to that coin.

Thanks

Sounds like a common vam-38, sorry. It's often confused for VAM-44. VAM-44 is in a weak slab (less than 4 feathers) while 5 feathers showing would be a 7/8 Strong variety.

Almost forgot. VAM-38 DOES have doubling on the cotton boll area.

  • Having owned a mint state Vam-44 a few years ago I would say that if the tripling on the bolls and leaves is not obvious it is not a Vam-44. It is very visible even without a loupe if you are looking at a mint state example. On the reverse you will only see three very tiny feathers which is the same as the Vam-33.
