PSA Grading and Irregular Edges

Can anyone enlighten me as to how PSA grades cards with irregularly cut edges? I'm not talking about "rough cuts" such as is common on O-Pee-Chees, but rather edges that don't exactly go in a straight line. I have a few otherwise nice looking cards from the 60's and 70's that have this issue. The most common problem I notice is a tendency for the edge to be wider in the middle than at the corners...kind of a long half-oval shape. In most cases, it's not overly offensive and I just wonder if I still have a shot at 7 or 8 with these cards. Any insight would be appreciated.

Got a scan? Are the corners at right angles/square? Not sure I can picture the card - are you talking about a diamond cut as Knuckles has posted? Those cards are actually shaped like a parallelogram.

Here's viewing one upright with the top loader lines to help see the fact that the corners are not squared.

  • No...not diamond cut, guys...I know all about that phenomenon. Thanks for the try....What I'm talking about is where the edge is actually curved...Diamond cuts are still a straight line, just angled.

This is what I'm talking about....There's no way I'm thinking about submitting the Rose and Winfield, but I thought I might give the Brett a try. I know I have others like it, but I can't get to them now. Just got my November Special submission back and I've got graded cards spread out all over the place.

    Any ideas?

Please take the Rose card and push the card all the way over to the left side so that it is flush on the bottom and the wider side will be touching the side wall. That way we can see how much it is off.

  • There you go guys. I enhanced the brightness a little so you can see the edge of the top loaders better. See what I mean about curved cuts on the left edges?

Those are going to either get "evid trim" or miscut , not graded. I just got back a card that looks like the Rose cut only mine's not as noticeable-evid trim.

Now is you were to reverse this procedure and put the cards on the opposite side, we can see how much they are off - the Rose is approaching a diamond cut IMO with a little twist - maybe also cut short L/R. That's just a guess. They are oddly sliced but they are appearing to be somewhite diamond cut with a little extra oddness - there does appear to be a slight bulge also - but how much of this is "illusion"? You would have to get a real good ruler and do some measuring.

  • Thanks for the input, guys. I'm going to send the Brett in for fun just to see what happens.

Just a guess, but I think PSA won't grade it:

N-8 Miscut - This term is used when the factory cut is an abnormal cut. The grading fees are returned. You will be given a voucher good for another submission for the same type of service.

I sent a similar looking '76 Brett from vending a couple of years ago and got it back labeled no grade, miscut. The '76 Brett is a tough card to get well cut, centered and without print defects. Anyone happen to know where that beast is on the sheet that year? I am guessing it is on the last row somewhere on the left.
