  • Beckett lists him as having a '1945 A's Team Issue #15'. Most likely a black and white postcard. I'll check the Standard Catalog later and see if anything was issued for his minor league career.

3.62 earned run average in over a hundred innings is nothing to be ashamed of.
Sounds like his awful won/lost record has more to do with lack of run support from a last place war time team.

    Good luck on your quest.

I find it absolutely shameful that this forum won't let you type the word "príckly pear"!

Whatever his record is I think it's very cool your grampa played pro ball. For most of us our grandfathers just sat in the bleachers drinking too many beers and then driving home drunk. Congrats to you!
  • I couldn't find anything in the Standard Catalog. Your best possibility is probably going to be old team programs, lineup cards, etc. It's possible that there are some other postcards floating around as well. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

  • hit post too soon- nellie fox played with the roses in 1945 so there may be some team pics out there for purchase

  • Thanks for everyone comments and help. I have copy of the 45 A's Team Issue It is 7 x10 black and white. He also played with George Kell in 43 with lancaster.

Here are a couple things that some may find interesting in 47 he pitched in 83 games.

There is actually an article on him in the July 1948 Baseball Digest talking about how he pitched in 137 games in a calander year. Anyone have this Mag. All I have is a copy of the article.

Also in 47 he won the American Assoc. League MVP award.

It's been really tough to come across anything. Paper shortages and small minor league teams.
  • Twinsthreepeat,
I have two vintage photo albums from the Lancaster area from the 1940s. They include quite a few photos of the Red Roses including stadium shots, player photos and team photos. The person who assembled these photo albums was a huge sports fan as they also include photos from Red Sox games and Hershey hockey photos. Email me at tfritz67@yahoo.com and I will see what I can find for you.
    Thanks

Twinsthreepeat -- Are you Steve Gerkin who pitched for Marietta in the 1988 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship?
  • Vargha,
No that wasn't me. I played A liitle college ball. Tried Out for the St. Paul Saints last year but didn't make the cut.
