1940-D ms64 FS nickel.....with a little toning : And Simple Question

Picked this up on Ebay last night at about 1am it's a Pcgs 1940-D ms64FS nickel, picked it up reasonably image , and it has a little bit of toning, The PCGS price guide has it listed at 55? but I don't think thats correct. Is there anybody really familiar with FS nicks that could give me a pretty accurate ballpark figure for this. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanxx

I've kept track of quite a few prices for FS Jeffs that have traded hands in the last 2 years or so but not at this low a grade for this date/mm. 65/66/67 are too easily available and affordable to go with a 64. My opinion price for a 64FS might be $10 which means it isn't worth the slabbing fee. 65's sell for around $30 and barely afford a profit.
Everything starts and everything stops at precisely the right time for precisely the right reason.
  • Thanks alot Spy: really appreciate the input, now I dont feel to bad I paid 20 bucks for it. So if you factor in its probable worth and the grading fee I probably broke even on it.....I liked it for the toning anyway: nothing spectacular or anything and I dont have a nickle in a TPG (jefferson). Still waiting on my 1883 ms64.

  • I would say it's worth $15 to me becuase it's already been slabbed and has some attractive toning on it. $55 is that pie in the sky price guide number that just won't happen.

Typically I find that I can get most coins for around 50% of what the PCGS guide prices them out, maybe a little more for key dates.
  • The 40-D is one of those dates that typically comes very nice. There are lots
    of full-step gem (65, 66, 67) coins out there.

You can't go too wrong with the price you paid, but could also easily have
bought a higher grade coin with nice toning for a few bucks more.

Your main problem is now that you have one colorful Jeff, you'll want more
    and more and more! image
