Will GAI or SGC grade proof cards? PSA said no

I recently found an extremely rare 1972 Todds Candy Lids card, which were never issued, but a few survived as "proofs" where the card is a square and the circular player label is printed on the picture, but it was not cut out. The set is so scarce there is not even a known checklist. I want to get it graded, but PSA said they won't do it. Does anyone know if GAI or SGC would grade something like this? The set is listed in the Krause catalog, I don't know about Beckett.

Sorry I don't know but if you have the time, could you post a pic? Which one did you find?

It's Clay Kirby. Pic is not the greatest.

Absolutely cool! Someone many months ago posted that they thought they had a proof but it was round and I didn't know anything about the set so I didn't question it. This one fits the description and pic in the catalog. They don't have this one listed - have you considered reporting it to Lemke at Krause to do an update?
Where did you find this? Unbelievable find!!!
    thanx for sharing

Maybe if you included a cover letter that ended with "Thanks, Levi at 707" or "Mark & Mike at Triple SSS."
  • Here is a 1973 proof:

Lifted from the 2004 Standard Catalog:

Sometime between the production of its regular issue candy lid sets of 1970 and 1973, Topps was working on another issue which survives today in proof form, either as uncropped squares or cut to the 1-7/8" diameter tabbed lid form which covered a plastic bucket of bubblegum nuggets. The 1972 (tentative date) proofs are very close to the 1973 issue in format, the principal difference being that the player portrait does not have a solid-color border as on the 1973s, and that the pictures of Seaver and Yaz on the back are set against green rather than orange stars. The extent of the checklist is unknown and, because of rarity, no values have been attributed.

Checklist (adding up SCDs, Beckett, and ones I've seen):

    Richie Allen
    Dusty Baker
    Carlton Fisk
    Ray Fosse
    Clay Kirby (JUST ADDED)
    Greg Luzinski
    Thurman Munson
    Gary Nolan
    Gaylord Perry
    Ellie Rodriguez
    Pete Rose
    Tom Seaver
    Willie Stargell

    Additional notes:
    - I've only seen one of each lid. My guess is that all of the lids from the '73 set are available in the '72 set (poses are identical although team names may differ, for instance Ray Fosse is with Cleveland in '72 and Oakland in '73).
    - Prices have ranged from $50 to $400 (in my experience).

Here are scans of the ones I have (all have green stars on the back including the Rose square cut):
