Did NGC designate VAM's on Binion slabbed coins?

I've seen some error coins like lamination error..... but not a VAM yet.....?

  • Heck, they didn't even give a grade on a lot of them!! There was a bulk low-price deal with the daughter (estate) and NGC that would preclude any close examination for VAM's.

  • Yes, Michael Fey was retained by the estate to pull out the top 100 VAMs and a few others. If you go to the NGC pop reports you will see Binion VAM designations included.

  • So the labels on the back of the slabs don't mean much either?
I have two Binion Morgans. One is an 1884-O that is toned black. The barcoded label says MS00. I thought maybe it was in mint state but too black to be graded so it got a double zero.
The other is an 1880-P. The label says MS50. I figured it was a mint state coin until someone spilled a Pepsi on it (check the photo), then it went to AU50.

  • I think you will find in those cases the MS does not meen Mint State, it simply indicates that the coin is a business strike and not a Proof.
