Most important numismatic lesson I learned in 2004....

If there is something about a coin that you do not like initially (a mark, the color, the strike--whatever), it will bother you more each day you own the coin. Better to not buy the coin or, if on approval, send it back ASAP. Unfortunately, I keep learning it over and over again. image

You're absolutely right, and I learned this some time ago. Your first instinct is always your best. If you immediately notice something on a coin that you don't like when you first look at it, stay away from it. It works the other way around too, If you first look at a coin and just fall in love with its looks, most likely you will always like the coin.

If you are asking people to post the lessons they have learned this year, for me it is to be patient with members who are struggling with "posting burnout". I have learned to get away for a while over the years, don't let yourself get addicted to posting here if you get upset about minor events and take them personally. This is a fun place, after all. The real problem is that the issue (mark, color, strike, luster) appears to get worse and worse the longer you own the coin.

A lesson learned is always a positive sign. Lessons forgotten and mistakes repeated are on the negative side of the ledger.
Hope that 2005 finds only new and constructive lessons to expand your ability to enjoy your collection.
    Happy Holidays

I agree 100%...and I would only add...it becomes even more true as the value of the coin goes up.
