Have any of you Commissioned One Dealer to Build a Set for You?

I was just wondering if collectors ever just have one dealer build their complete set for them?? If both the collector and dealer have mutual trust it could be a nice way to get nice coins . You would not need to go to all the shows yourself, not search all the ebay listings and deal with returns etc. I know this is all part of the fun at times, but it can also be frustrating for people with limited time, but still want to be able to acquire nice coins. It would also seem that a dealer that attends all the shows and auctions may actually be able to get soem better coins than you would find on your own.

Have you ever built a set this way?

Can any one dealer find all the coins in a set for you?

Would you expect to get a better price on the coins with a commitment like this?

If I were smart and/or patient, that is what I would do. Unfortunately, it takes out of my hands the fun of searching for coins, not to mention the educational (and humbling) experience of making mistakes.

I personally think that would be a boring way to collect. As RYK said, it takes the fun out of finding a coin yourself. At least when I've asked a dealer for help, I get to look, too image I just usually don't find it first image

    Yes, One.

    Yes, they did.

I actually went in expecting to pay a premium for the time he invested searching for the coins, but I actually ended up paying less than I would have if I would have aquired them individually.

Harrumph! Nonsense! Who would do that?
Why, that would be like letting a mutual fund manager select your stocks.

um...er....uh....that wasn't a good "against" argument, was it?

Most of the fun is in the search be it Ebay, this forum, or hobby publication and the best..a coin show. Why should I give someone else that satisfaction?

Collecting would be a whole lot cheaper if everyone did that. The dealer buying for a client is not having to worry about how long he will have to hold it. Especially if it is a substantial priced coin.

Coin "agents" buying and selling coins are really the only way to go for top quality. Now, I'll admit that it takes the "fun" out for some but for those who would rather have an expert working for them than making "mistakes" it works out just fine.

The problem is one of "trust." Most people don't believe that a dealer will actually SEARCH for nice coins for a customer.

Just as in real estate, the "good" dealers end up with the "good" customers, but the whole process ends up making more "goods" on both sides of the transaction.

Just look at the number of threads thanking different dealers for a nice coin that the collector had been searching for for a long time. The dealer has the time and the eye to make good deals come together.

It's too bad that most don't recognize that.

A dealer can pass a coin on for a very small percentage markup if he is not "inventorying" it with all the ads and contacts needing to be made AFTER the coin is found.

But it takes a whole new mindset that "most" collectors probably won't use.

When I started out in the 70's. Now as a dealer I utilize the services of a handful not including auctions or "fun" stuff.

As a collector, I tried it once. I'll never do it again.

As a dealer, as much as I'd like to build collections for everyone reading this, I would not recommend that you hire me or any other dealer to build your collection for you. If you're not deeply involved in building your own collection, you're probably wasting your time and money.

Not a single dealer, but I use several trusted dealers to stay on the lookout for superb coins in the series I am interested in. And I always try to look for the coins myself as that is part of the fun of the process. You can give yourself a great education just by looking at hundreds of auctions lots at large shows and comparing your grades with the listed grade and then seeing what the lots actually sell for at auction, and figuring out why they sold for what they did.

  • If I ever do a short gold set I'll probably try this approach. I don't trust my gold grading skills, or those of the TPG's, enough to match up a nice original grouping.

  • Without reading any other replies; to me, getting a dealer to get a set together FOR you would take all the fun out of coin collecting in general. IMO the thrill of the hunt is one of the most exciting aspects....

I can also hire someone to eat my meal for me at the 5 star restaurant.
    What fun is that?

I think for the very, very top stuff you have to have a dealer working for you.

For the "not so quite top" stuff, like 99% of us collect, you are better off doing the leg work yourself.
  • I can see that most of you would rather find your own coins, and I can completely understand the logic to that, but I was curious what you all would think of the idea. I like looking for coins as much as any of you, but there are the shows where you find nothing, all the bad deals on ebay, the coins on approval that you can't beleive they would have sent, etc. etc. it can get quite expensive at times returning coins.
