Mr. Martinez

“ My heart will always be with the Boston fans. I hope that everyone who truly loves me will still support me now that I won't be with the Red Sox. ”

Pedro was a great pitcher for Boston, and he helped the team acheive something they had not done since 1918.

Like I said in a previous thread I am glad Pedro got what He wanted, he did Boston good and I wish him the best, cant blame the guy for taking a better deal. As far as Im concerned he owes Boston nothing now that he helped bring the world series title to Beantown.

Some Sox fans are not bitter. I see your rationale guys. However, going to another team because it was a better deal just does not jive with me. You Boston fans are some of the best sports fans. Really!! You stayed loyal to your team regardless of not winning a WS for so long. It is honorable and I truly respect that. Had Martinez stayed with the Red Sox, he would have been walking on water for the rest of his life. He would be what Babe Ruth is to the Yankees in a way. An old Martinez pitching in Boston would get so much support and sympathy from Boston fans--he would be a legend in the making. Boston offered a fair contract. It was not like he was being driven out of town.

On another standpoint, Martinez chose a league where he might be more effective in. Pitcher's ball parks and no DH might help him. He knows he runs out of gas, so maybe the NL was more a career move instead of dishing the Sox.

I think Pedro's biggest mistake is overlooking his legacy as one of the all-time greatest Boston sports heroes. He just píssed that away. I see him as a clone of Mickey Mantle (or even Ron Guidry). Had he stayed with the Sox, he would cement his place in history as an all-timr great great player marred by injury who became an icon for his team merely by his presence in his later years. Mantle did squat his last 4 years in New York, yet he walks on water to this day. Pedro could have gone out the same exact way. Now, he has to prove himself all over again in a new league and if he falls short, he'll be remembered as a great pitcher who failed at the end.

I agree Con40, my sentiments exactly.

  • As a sox fan, I have no problem seeing him go to the Mets! Boston management I bet is singing a sigh of relief that he is gone. The Mets over payed for a guy who will spend a lot of time on the DL. Why do you think he won't submit to an MRI on his arm? He is damaged goods and the people of Boston know it!

Exactly, and this is what really puzzles Red Sox Nation about the deal. Pedro is (was) such an icon, and he just helped deliver us the WS championship - he really could have gone down as one of the all-time greats in Red Sox history. He still might, but it won't be the same now. What about endorsements? Half of the whole city of NY hates Pedro, and Mets fans will get all over him this July when they are 20 games out, and he is on the DL. From an intelligent standpoint, it is a good move to see him go, but you still have to believe that most Sox fans wanted to see him retire in a Boston uniform.
