    Hi there and welcome aboard.

    Buy a digital camera instead.

  • Because I am a high school student, so I think can not afford to buy a digital camera. I think a scanner is cheaper.

If your intent is primarily for photos of coins, a low mega-pixel camera like the Fujipix 2300, ( I use that one, you can check the photos in my sig line to get an idea) , can be had for much cheaper than a scanner and takes wonderful pictures. It is more than you really need for web photos. Scanner do not produce near the Quality that a digital camera can, and different techniques can make toned coins dance off the screen.image
  • Wait a minute, why are we encouraging his coin addiction? My suggestion is get out, get high and get laid. After all, that's what High School is for.

I have a $100 HP 3500c that takes great scans of copper, or toned coins. It usually hates bright silver or nickel.

    All scans, very different results.

  • Digital is better but my 1200x4800 dpi 48-bit Visioneer scanner does a decent job, in my opinion. You can find newer models HERE or at stores like Office Max, often with rebates. With the low cost you can try your hand with it until you can afford a digital camera which continue to drop in prices.

I use a digicam now, but I still use my $50 UMAX Astra 3450 that makes decent scans.

If you place a coin into a large Airtite (clear plastic) holder and tilt the Airtite a few degrees, you can get pretty decent detail.

    Example:

Like DorkGirl, though, I have trouble scanning lustrous silver. Tilting helps there too, but the light really washes out the detail.
