1901 Vicky Proof Set. Toning, Reds, Luster, Long Image etc...

I'm back home from Greece. My numismatic adventure with Dimitri is over, now to show you some of what I photographed. I gave you a quick taste in another thread but I think I reshot some of those coins and Dimitri wants a dark background. So let's start off with a 1901 Brit proof set shall we?

I'm going to start to put Dimitri's coins into a directory here http://formerairline.com/dimitricoins/ and build a basic site later. Stay tuned.

Super coins - especially the shilling and florin.
Why is the farthing so much darker than the other coins? A different finish?

The farthing looks like it was blackened at the mint (as I've seen on South African proof coppers).

  • As Shiro says, it's a different finish. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it though.

Nice job Phil and Great coins Dimitri.

The farthings were blackened at the mint so people would not confuse them with Sovereigns.

  • Darkhorse, an awesome mint set, especially the magnificently toned Shilling & Florin. Not to detract but I don't believe there were any Proof sets struck in 1901. Thanks for the great Pics. image

  • according to Spink," there were not any "proof sets" issued in 1901, however, proofs exist for most years of the "Old Head" issued in all denominations and are considered extremely rare. " (page 3961 of 39th Ed.)

edited to add: Awesome set whichever it is!! image

Spinaker, may be wrong, but I think the notation on page 439 refers to the copper/bronze "old head" issues. Either way, that 1901 Florin is certainly a keeeeeeeeper.

Wow, LordM would sure like to get his paws on that set.

I like the farthing as well as the silver.

Mac nailed it. I bought this unc set as a whole,in a nice carton case, and the only coin that really needed upgrading was the florin. There was a British seller at the time, who had broken up one of these magnificently toned 1901 sets , (C.Cooke also had one a little later) but his scans were terrible ,so I first took a shot with the shilling and then got greedy and lost the florin by a last minute snipe. So I emailed the winner of the auction and I proposed him to pay for the full price of the florin he had just won, and I would give him my slider white unc for free.

The deal went through. I first sent the money and the coin, then I expected Ken,this was his name, who had just started collecting florins with his grandson ,to send me this one. In the meantime ,we exchanged some emails, basically with me giving him some advice on his new hobby, especially regarding ebay. It arrived a few days later with a note saying:

    "Dimitri,

I now understand why you like toned coins. Had I known what this coin looked like , I wouldn't have accepted the deal, but you were honest from the start and I shall keep my word.

    All the best.

    Ken"

The farthing was blackened at the Mint JamminJ, I believe as an attempt to avoid public confusion with another similar looking coin of a higher value perhaps, the British experts of this forum certainly now better. And Chuck, your -complete with gold- set can simply not be put to shame, I'd be very glad to take it off your hands in case you changed your mind. image It just shows what great photographic skills such as Phil's can produce.
As for LordM, we closely collaborate on his own, much more expanded 1901 set ,since it covers the entire empire of the time.He was the recipient of the bright white BU shilling that the original set contained.

Finally, none of the two bronze coins would qualify as red, if slabbed by a TPG, but I preferred them despite the fact that I temporarily owned full red examples. There's also the 1901 Maundy set and the Terner half sovereign, along with another choice unc but still no sovereign yet. Even in newsman's excellent slabbed set, the sovereign is the lowest grade I believe, an MS62. This London date is much tougher in choice/gem than some might think. Thanks for the comments , the florin might be available in a bigger shot , I wouldn't know yet though.

  • Wow, that Florin is superb and almost looks like a specimen coin. Some of the "veiled head" silver pieces do tone in the most beautiful shades but that one is a real show stopper. imageimage
