I have some questions about identifying AT

I have heard references many times to looking at color that just seems to float on the coins surface.

Is that something that a digital image can show? If so, can someone post side by side a good example of color that floats and color that is part of the metal itself?
Also, there are references to the order of colors in which they show up on coins when NT vs AT.
What is the proper order for NT and is there a sequence that is always AT? Or is it always something that is out of the proper sequence is suspect?
Sorry, I'm a noob at toning, and must get up to speed.
