New (maybe) ebay scam...

coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,310 ✭✭✭✭✭
I know it is a scam...I just dont know if it is new.

I bid last week on this 1875-CC and was the underbidder.

Today I received an email offering a second chance offer. The thing is that the offer didnt come from the seller, since I know the seller. My dad drove all the way to Kansas to look at these coins. Unfortunately, we were shut out of a crazy bidding war on ebay.

I digress.

I played dumb and responded to the email and got a pretty obvious scam back. Just thought I would let everyone know.

This is a second chance offer.

The winner of the auction ( the initial buyer ) didn't complete the transaction so now you have the chance to buy the item at your bid price.

Since this is a second chance offer i must pay for all the shipping costs.

I will ship the item via U.P.S Services Air Express and you will receive the package in 48 hours.

You will have 7 days to inspect the item and if you will not be satisfied or the item won't be exactly as described i will give you a full refund within 24 hours ( eBay will guarantee for that because i have a US$ 20,000.00 deposit in an eBay managed purchase protection account ).

So if you are interested in my proposal i must ask you to e-mail me as soon as posible with your full and CORRECT name and address so i can prepare the shipping and start a secure transaction with eBay.

eBay will let you know all you have to do as so on as we start this transaction.

Thank you for your time and waiting to hear back from you ASAP !

Best Regards

I would race to the post office and send him a money order!

Actually, I have received legitimate second chance offers before. It looks like it might be a nice coin. Perhaps you could contact the seller, exchange references, and make the transaction outside ebay.

It is a scam, and it's not new. Been making the rounds for a few months now.

Obviously a scam, just didnt know if it was new or not.

Amazing how ebay does nothing about these.

I know the seller, talked to him this morning, the coins are in the mail to the guy that outbid me on all three... image

Jeez, you're actually right for a change!

Remember, "it's a legitimate estate sale"--the biggest attempted scam in ebay history!!!

But Ebay does have something like this... to be sure that it is an offer through Ebay, check your bid listing of completed coins... a second chance offer note appears under the orriginal listing with a link to the new auction... and you get a very similar email from Ebay as you listed below... I've seen this before... I contacted the seller to verify, purchased the coin through Ebay cause it had it's own page, paid through Paypal, and got the coin.

The strange ones are unsolicited offers from third parties... hey, I saw you wanted a pop 2 coin and bid $1000 for it... I just so happen to have the other one and will sell it to you for $1100 if you want it. You interested? I tend to report those.

And I just noticed your line about it coming from a third party... report it.

  • This is why I don't like 2'nd chance offers.
Even if it was legit, since ferminadaza only bid $2,915, you should have only had to pay $3000 for the coin not $4000.

Any second chance offers I receive are deleted immediately. A shill comes in and outbids you, now the seller knows your high bid & offers it to you for that bid!
    Homey don't play that game.

  • Looks like ebay's new "let's show everyone what you bid" policy is backfiring........
  • They just convicted a guy here in D.C. after he sold the same car for the 5th time for cash/cashiers check. Used duplicate Va. titles. The last sale was in the F.B.I. parking lot (talk about dumb) !!!!
