The only way that you can get ASE's unopened is to buy a 500 coin green box, with the original mint straps.

All of the rolls are in tubes that can be opened and closed. There is no seal to them.

I paid $190, delivered, a couple of weeks ago, for a roll of 2004 ASEs (gifts for coworkers)

Here's the quick study on SAE's. Often confused as American Silver Eagles v.s. Silver American Eagles. 20 to a roll, usually cherry picked if you buy them from a dealer (who can afford a whole box?) but you can tell an original roll by the fields/strike but you have to lay them all out under the same light and try and keep from dropping on on the pile or coughing or sneezing or goobering up the coins. US mint does not sell rolls of MS to the public as far as I know in fact I don't think they even sell anything but proofs. The MS may only be available in 500 coin boxes and they are broken up from there for sale as rolls.

Key rolls are '86 at about $300 from a dealer and on ebay, '00 and I think the price on these is variable but there is some premium, and '96 by far the hardest to find and they clock in at about $575-$600 if you can find them (look for these to increase significantly) but they can be bought for about $25 a coin so why they are $30 each in a roll and $25 as singles I can't say. One guy was selling a strapped box of '96's on ebay for $18,000 but I don't know if he got it. No one can say what happened to the '96's they just aren't around. Makes you think hoard or in europe or something. Maybe someone knows the story on why these are so hard to find.

Common date rolls sell for about $200 and are fairly available. Some folks like to collect roll-sets and that is what captured my fancy but I still have a ways to go except that I do have my '86, '96, and '00 done. The coin is nice, big, bullion, and an excellent design. The design could have been improved some on the reverse, it just doesn't strike me as being particularly grand...maybe some rays or something would help but the obverse walking liberty is certainly a nice look, particularly on the cameo proofs.
