1898-P Morgan VAM?

Anyone know what this Morgan VAM might be? It's an 1898-P. The scans aren't the best. The cap is doubled on the right side, slightly near date (to left), and there are some spikes under the olive branch (under the eagle's talons). Also a small die gouge under the lower blossom. I can't find it in the books or updates, but I may be missing it. Any ideas? I have a couple of others I'm giving up on.

VAM-3 and VAM-10 are the only reported near dates for that year. Large photos would help, but it sounds new.

    And welcome to the boards!
  • Thanks for the welcome. I got some pictures loaded.
  • Wolf359, not sure if I know you or not. Have you seen this 1921-P filled die?

  • How do you embed the image instead of leaving it as an attachment?
I see the IMAGE icon. Do I reference the attachment somehow with HTML tags?

Nope, the filled die is news to me. But I'm not familiar with all the 21-P vams. Lots of new discoveries in 1921 Morgans the last 3-4 years.

Embedded images are not attached here to the forum...they are links. Use the picture icon when posting, and fill in the link.
  • I thought I'd try for help again. 1898-P Morgan with spikes under the eagle's talon, double cap, near date, die scratch in lower blossom. Any ideas?

I see die chips and some probably machine doubling. Die scratches are common, although usefull in attribution. Please understand that most varities are usually described in a sentence or two, and not examined to such detail that die scratches are recorded. Exceptions would be for Top 100 coins, extremely rare vams, etc where there needs to be no doubt as to the accuracy of the vam. The 1898 is almost certainly VAM-3 or VAM-10. One way to confirm would be to purchase/borrow attributed coins in ANACS or SEGS holders and compare them to your coin and see if the die chips, scratches, date position, doubling, etc line up.

The 21-P, though, might be new. You can also send any or all of your coins directly to Mr. Leroy Van Allen for attribution. He will document and assign any new varities you may discover. PM me if you need details.
