Not too shabby. The dealer is reputable. The usual suspects appear to be bidding on it.

That looks like a Staples' pic. I just won a nice red 1910 Canadian large cent from him.

    Go for it.

  • Yeah it's from Staples, just not sure if maybe I want one of the earlier models....
  • maybe I want one of the earlier models....

As I'm sure you know, anything earlier than 1874 and you get into some big money when you can find them. They are all beautiful coinz in BU, IMHO, but the earlier "high relief" design is extra special.

Agreed. Still looking for a good one of those as well. Finding one and staying solvent may be mutually exclusive.

Yeah that is where I am at, I have an 1847 Crown in AU53 (PCGS), but do I want to go deep for a half crown or not? I got the crown at a very fair price about 8-12 months ago...

Well, why not get one of each obv. design type? image

Here's the relief on an 1840 YH half crown for comparison.....please forgive the small image.

Very nice, I think the upcoming HWCA is going to have a couple of the earlier Half Crowns........

That's an absolute beauty of a halfcrown, Mac.

  • Mac, just an exceptional example to show the beauty of the type. It looks like a PCGS slab, if so could you share what it graded. TIA

  • rhound, nice coin. Good luck if you decide to bid.

I don't think the Dark Mouse owns anything below MS-65!!

    Yes, I bought it slabbed!

It was graded MS65 by PCGS. It has a few too many small ticks to go higher, in fact, it's the lustre which really pulls up the eye appeal. It has a very light golden/champagne toning on both sides.

That 1878 is probably more vibrant in real life....that image looks like a scan which really flattens the relief.

Well, I'm not surprised, it has the look of a gem. I also have an early coin, with attractive toning, but not as scarce a date the 1840 is.

Sorry Glenn, I can't be of any help on this subject. Maybe you should wait if you're not sure. It's rare however to be able to obtain better bargains off ebay.

I like that type of toning on the '44, Bob. It gives the coin a nice look. image
  • The average Unc 1878 Halfcrown only brought $412....I guess British coins are in the crapper. image

    The 1878 went for $412.

That's one of the more "common" dates.
