David Lawrence Rare Coins is One of THEE Best Dealers.

They say people like to do business with people they like, and DLRC is one of them to me. Everyone at David Lawrence is extremely professional and cordial, and will go out of their way to treat you like you where a king or a queen. I have had a recent (and past) pleasant experience with them, and I will buy from them just because.

Two years ago they did something for me that helped me even though I had no justification for even ASKING for the "favor". I look back, and I have been basically a pain-in-the-you know what client of theirs, yet they have still decided to keep me as a client.

I even once wrote in this forum a negative comment about their operations and said something that WAS TOTALLY UNTRUE, made them look bad, and even called them a "scam".

I want to apologize to them, and I want them to know I value them, even though they should have "fired" me as a customer!

I see some negative postings about dealers on here all the time, and I am starting to believe that most of the time, it is NOT the dealer's fault. I am a financial planner, and out of every 50 clients, I will always get one of those "bad apples" that ruin my day. I have been like that to DLRC, but I owe them for all they have done for me, and had to put up with!

Please use this thread for only positive comments about DLRC or any other dealers.

Sincerely,

Lloyd

Lloyd: I've had good experiences with DLRC, and picked up this PCGS AU-58 1893-CC $20 Liberty from them several months ago...

I must confess I had not one but two buys from them two weeks ago. I got tired of waiting for some Lincoln dates to come up on Ebay. Well someone here had mentioned them recently and I decided to take a look again. Well, they had three coins I needed, and ALL three about 25% under PCGS values. PLUS...Free Shipping! I knew all three would go for more than PCGS value on Ebay. So I bought one, waited a day or two after realizing how easy it was, and bought the other two. After Christmas, guess where I am going to take a look....

I've have good experiences with all of the dealers that I've dealt with. Those include: DLRC, Steve Estes, Chuck D'Ambra, Pinnacle, Eagle Eye, Whitlow.

I've never had a problem with them. They did switch two pictures last time I bought a coin, and I got the "wrong" one. Turns out I got a coin I wasn't expecting to buy based on the picture, and then a discount on the one I wanted (albeit it was a little more than I expected). Two coins instead of one, both very nice, and very professional the whole way through. A+ in my book.

I don't know anyone their, have never spoken to anyone their, but I continue to purchase coins from them. Why, I like the prices, they ship fast and all the coins I have purchased from them are nice. What else would you want from an online dealer?

No complaints on buying from DLRC, superior ... but, I was disappointed when I shopped some PCGS slabbed coins and they refused to even quote a buy price.
  • While I did not inlude DLRC on my list of top three (headed by Rare Coins of New Hampshire---rare-coins.com), they are certainly among the top ten in terms of service, etc. I have bought several coins from them, ans even the one return was handled professionally with zero aggrevation. My only concern with DLRC is that they have become very large and just as a matter of personal attention, I prefer the individual service at places like Legend and RCNH, over a highly computerized business model. Perhaps I'm just an old fashioned coinguy. David Lawrence's father was certainly a joy to talk about Barbers!

  • Thank you Lloyd and thank you everyone for your positive comments (and your business!!!). There are now 13 people that work at DLRC and we operate very much like a family business. Anyone will tell you, I am a hands-off manager with one guiding directive. Treat everyone well -- buying or selling -- and it will pay off for us in the long run. If we ever fail you in the dept, then please let me know personally.

Happy Holidays and we look forward to growing more next year.

    Sincerely,
    John Feigenbaum

I've bought numerous coins from DLRC. No problems at all.
I've negotiated with them on each coin and they've responded favorably each time.
I'll continue to do business with them.
    Good folks.

    A good dealer thread--how novel! I'll bite.

    My top three would include:
    1. Doug Winter/Pinnacle: DW got me started in rare gold coin collecting. His raregoldcoins.com was the benchmark for an educational/retail coin website. I am sorry that he is not able to keep it up, but he continues to write excellent articles for the Pinnacle site. While everyone knows him as THE "branch mint gold man", he is actually an excellent and well-rounded numismatist. Joining Pinnacle has only enhanced both parties. I have had some peripheral dealings with Todd Imhoff (he sold me my most recent purchase, below), and he seems also to be a great guy.

    2. Gold Rush Gallery/Al Adams: Al will probably finally get some recognition for putting together the Gold Rush Collection (including the Brashers and the capped head proof gold) being auctioned at FUN. He works out of Dahlonega, Georgia, ground-zero for southern gold enthusiasts. He is a very nice, honest, ethical gentleman. What people might not like about Gold Rush Gallery is that they have a very small internet footprint. Frankly, that's what I like best about them. They sell coins the old-fashioned way and have a knack for quickly becoming friends of their clients.

    3. Legend: Laura and Legend get a lot of print on our forum, some of it not very flattering. While some might not like her style, if you are spending serious cash on coins, she is the kind of person you want on your side. Hard-working, knowledgeable, and professional. Does she get a little cranky when stressed out at work? Sure, but so do I, and I am not ashamed to admit it. Steve/EVP, a budding professional numismatist, is an unqualified expert on seated coins and has a more vast numismatic knowlege than he probably realizes.

    Honorable mention:

Mark Feld: I have purchased one coin from Mark since he went independent. If he sold the coins that interested me, I would flock to him. Great guy!

DLRC: I have purchased one coin, and it went smoothly.

Broken CC: Solid guys who do carry the coins that I like, but I wish the online pictures were a little better. It would get me more interetsed in their coins. I have bought and sold coins with Broken CC and never had a problem.

I have had single purchases from Dukie101, CoinLieutenant, Russ, CollectorCoins, and perhaps a few other forum members--sorry if I forgot. I have also had single coin purchases from Bob Green/Park Ave, New World Rarities, MGSI, and perhaps a few others.

Overall, I have never had what I would consider to be a bad transaction. All sellers I have worked with have treated me professionally and have stood by their product. I have had occasion to return coins a few times and no one ever hassled me. No complaints about dealers here.

I agree DLRC is one of the best dealers for classics, but for Moderns, they are NO DIFFERENT THAN THE SHOP AT HOME guys. In many cases they ask 10x what the coin is actually worth. They repeatedly ask $100-$400 for coins easily obtainable on ebay for $20-$40.

I like DLRC. As I've already said, IMHO, no one selling today has a better functioning website. I don't see a negative in our ability to cruise the DLRC coin/currency lists, see something you like, click a link, make a secure payment, have the coin arrive promptly, experience a 100% hassle free return if you find you don't like it. I only wish other dealers offered the same ease of use (noting David Hall RC has recently made several moves in this direction). Part of why DLRC works so well, for me, is the quality of their online pics. As a general guide, DLRC pics will usually tell the coin story fairly well, even if they don't have time to make each pic into a statement of art, as in the realm of poorguy, Anaconda, others.

Mary Lee, at DLRC, is a good contact if you have any problem with your order. The DLRC tech guy, Doug Hill, is responsive to correcting any online glitches you might report. Win and John have both been helpful to my account, even though we've communicated only be e mail. I have the feeling DLRC really is a family business made good, continuing in the spirit of David Lawrence. I like them a lot, as if you can't tell!

Yes, as I've said before...great to buy from, poor prices when selling to them.

I'm a little miffed today. Sent a coin in for evaluation on December 18th, didn't get an offer until today...so the coin sat there for a week...and the offer was less than 1/3 of greysheet bid. Yes, it's an ANACS coin, but the offer was still really low!

Once again we find ourselves at the receving end of half the facts. Mr. Lee sent us a coin over the holiday weeks. It's an 1886-O Morgan in an ANACS MS63 holder that says "Reverse planchet defect." I personally grade the coin MS61+ and this date is bid about $600 in MS60 and $3000 in MS63. MS62's are bid around $1250. We offered to buy the coin for $1000 or try it on consignment as high as $1500. I don't understand why anyone would be miffed by this, but presenting partial facts in a public forum to hurt our repuation is not the place to air this sort of thing.

We take great pride in our business ethics here at DLRC and our margins are quite low becuase we turn over a great deal of coins.

Thank you all again who support us, and I am always available by email if you have anything to discuss.

    Happy New Year,
    John

  • Have delt with DLRC many times in the last few years. Speak mainly with Jack Robinson, sometimes with Win.
Have always been treated fairly and respectfully. When I choose to wholesale coins they have been the first I call and will remain so.

Thanks for setting the standard High!

Half the facts? Just what "half" did I miss? Since you never told me in the email from Win it was an MS61+ coin in your opinion.

It's better than the NGC 62 on your site for $1750.

Ok, you want a public brawl, you've got it. Post the photos!

Berating a dealer because they won't offer full bid for a non PCGS/NGC coin - and one with a problem at that? Silly.

None here either. You are great to buy from.

TDN: Stick a sock in it. Where did I ever say I wanted full bid moron?
  • Figures:

I specifically said no negative threads, and this Wolf guy shows up. Sell your faulty Morgan somewhere else then. Judging by what the coin is and its holder, DLRC would have paid you way too much for it.

And you decide to rip on Bruce too. He would use your coin as a rock-skipper to the ocean.

My favorite 3 dealers are Andy Skrabalak of Angel Dee's coins. Mark Feld, and Dave Weygant. These three dealers always have coins with tons of eye appeal.

You decided to rag on a dealer because his offer [related to bid] was too low. Bid is sight seen and your coin had a problem and was in a third tier holder. And you call me a moron?

    Stupid is as stupid does.

David Lawrence had the coin in hand to evaluate, so "sight seen" applied here. I already posted that. A mint error is just that - a mint error, not a problem. Not hidden, documented on the slab. A turn off to some, a turn on to others.

Ok, I'll ask again. Nicely. Point out where I asked for "FULL BID" as you claim. Thanks in advance.
