What's the most you have paid for a card? to sell? to keep?

I know some buy cards to resell, and some buy cards to keep.

What's the most you have paid for a card to keep? And what's the most you have paid for a card to resell?

I have paid $1,100 for a 1952 Bowman PSA 6 Mantle to put in a set, but it was to resell.

I paid $424 for a Frank Thomas card. It is part of the 1997 Leaf game-used set, #/100. It is the batting glove card, and the reason I paid so much is that it has his "Big Hurt" logo from the glove in the swatch. Completely unique, I've never seen another. These cards are tough to find, period. The ones I have found almost all have some sort of "premium" swatch, like a logo or multiple embroidered colors or patches from the jersey, before they were called patch cards. I also rationalized the price because I paid $500 for 4 of the other cards from the set, back when they booked for $400-500 each. I think I also paid a similar price for a Ted Williams Piece of History 500 HR Club bat card. I try not to think about that one. They've dropped significantly, probably 50%, but they're not worthless yet as it's still very a popular modern set.

The next highest price I've paid for a card was $275 for a PSA 6 1971 Topps Greatest Moments Reggie Jackson, an upgrade over the PSA 5 I paid $150 for a year earlier. I sold the 5 the next week and it went for $308 (!). I still can't get over that one. It was like someone paid me $33 and gave me a free 6.

I don't think I've ever paid very much for an investment card. I'm usually in the niche of buying for under $5 and selling for over $10. I do have some nice 1957 Topps that I paid $16 each for that I'll get slabbed someday, hopefully getting 8s all around, but I'm not that brave when it comes to putting much money into a single card.

  • given that i have no financial resources whatsoever, my biggest price purchase was a hank aaron psa 6 rookie card i bought a few weeks ago for $700.
  • additionally, i don't buy to sell. ive learned that if i use that as my motive in collecting, things get out of hand.
  • i dropped $1800 on a psa 9 jordan rc.....took a bath on that one.

Too far into the 5-figure range to state publicly. I was a moron. Well, I still am, but I was at the height on that purchase.

Cmon now, vargha. It must have been an awesome card to have cost "far into the 5-figure range"

The most I have paid for a card was for a PSA 8 1986 Fleer Jordan. I paid $800 at the time and it is worth about $500 today.

It was an awesome card . . . and one that I lost money on. (I always lose money on all of my card transactions, for any of you IRS agents perusing these boards.)

You guys probably don't give a crap (not baseball) I bought a Gordie Howe RC to keep for $1,250 cad so about $1,000 US... It was to keep but ended up selling it. I made $100. An ungraded Bobby Orr RC for $800 US for re-sale made $200. I was hopeing for higher grades for these two cards and in turn a higher profit but at least I didn't lose.

To keep I just won another Gordie Howe which hasn't arived in the mail yet for $500 US really nice centering, great color, had a little mark on the back from glue and the corners are a little soft but all in all its nicer than the one I mentioned above. It's my xmas present from my wife. image So it's a keeper.

koby - Vargha could have built a new house with all the bricks he put out of his body on that one. And that would have been necessary, because Mrs. Vargha would have kicked him out of the one he was in if she found out. image

    $1080 for this bad boy:

I paid for it by selling about $2600 worth of cards on eBay, including the Ichiro Ultimate Collection card that MW was busting me about a few months ago. I ended up making almost 400 on the card (sold it for $750) right before he broke the hits record. I used the other $1600 to help pay for this:

and a few other cards for my personal collection.

Bought a raw '69 Reggie rookie in 1985 for $100.

Sold that same card in 2002, slabbed as a PSA 7 OC, for $75.

    Lesson learned: Priceless
  • From a board member here I forget how it started. Something about he would sell someone 1500.00 in MCGWIRE cards if they had the courage to buy or something like that so they could be broken up and sold and make afew buck on ebay. They were some minor league cards in black and white all PSA 10's. Long story short I found a buyer for them that DAY at 2000.00 I had crazysol ( thats his name just though of it) mail them directly to the other guy never touched them and made 500.00.
