  • Not really a trade but more of a wish I knew then what I do now. When I was about six or seven I had an older cousin that lived with us. He had a bunch of cards in the basement and I remember seeing a small card with blue ink all over it. Dont ask me why the name stuck with me but it was eddie plank. This could have very well been a reprint but I sure would like to know now.

I sold my '51B Mantle PSA 8oc early this year, before I had much feedback. If I had waited, I'm sure it would have gone for another grand or so because bidders would have felt more confident. Also, if I had waited, I wouldn't have sold it and kept it for my HOF Rookies set.

You know, MorrellMan, you might want to send that marriage certificate in to PSA/DNA to see if it's authentic. image

sounds like the story of the guy who's selling a t206 Wagner on ebay even though he "knows nothing about the card."

    yeah, right.

  • Great thread; great way to re-live depressing deals.

In 1991, when I first got married, I had no job and was desperate for money. I had a bunch of vintage cards - some nice, some in off condition. I put them in a binder and brought them to a card show, and sold them all in one shot to a dealer for $400. $400 seemed like a gold mine to me at the time - it was probably two months of groceries for my wife and me. In hindsight, that was pretty unscrupulous of the dealer, but I took his money, so I guess I can't blame the guy.

In the binder? Hell, there were about ten sheets of vintage cards. Some of them that I can remember - 1953 Topps Jackie Robinson, 1969 Nolan Ryan, 1965 Carlton RC, 1950 Bowman Duke Snider, 1966 Mantle, T206 Rube Waddell, 1964 Pete Rose. They were all pretty much HOFers.

Thank God for eBay. I remember a show dealer offering me $50 for a cards that they would mark as $200 and telling me that that that is the price for being on the customer side of the table. Now that there is eBay, collectors are no longer forced to take lowball offers from slimy show dealers.

About ten years ago I traded a mint '67 Carew Rookie at a show for an '84 Fleer update set, along with some basketball cards. I didn't know anything about grading until a few years ago....and when I pulled the set from the closet to look at it then I was sick. Both the Clemens and Puckett cards were miscut....like 99-1 centering. The Carew card was so sharp...I recall the first dealer I showed it to told me he thought it was trimmed. Arghh.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

  • I didn't trade anything I regretted. I basically lost them all in
poker games. In 1990, I lost a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan in a poker game. A flush to a Full House. This was the type of game where you brought your check book, wrist watches, and anything valuable if you ran out of money. That's just one of the stuff I wish I had back. Along with my (2) Uncanny X-Men # 94 (new X-men) now valued at $1,000 each, and X-Men Giant Size #1 (first new X-Men), Hulk #181 (1st Appearance Wolverine), Amazing Spider-Man #1 (paid $200 back in 1984 VF condition....easily $5,000 in that condition today). I no longer gamble. Now I'm truly depressed. Thanks for bringing up the thread. Looking back, I guess I wish I never got out of comics (sold the rest). They seem to appreciate a lot better than sportscards. Also the fact that comics has got into the grading game.

I can remember in 1991 when Stadium Club just came out, I had an unopened pack with Mo Vaughn on the back, and this is when Mo was supposed to be someone. I had ripped an entire box, and no Bagwell or Gonzalez... and I traded the pack to this neighbor kid for a NM-NM/MT 1980 Topps set. The kid ripped the pack right in front of me, pulled Bagwell, Gonzalez and a Phil Plantier and I was practically ready to cry at age 15. I could not believe the kid just pulled those 4 cards from a single pack, when the other 35 packs in the box did not contain a single card of any of those players.

Meanwhile, I held onto the set... I submitted the Henderson for grading, it's well-centered and got an 8. Guess I came out OK in the end, but at the time, I was devastated.

That is what I hated about card stores, they tried to rip you off when you either bought or sold something to them. Every card they sold was mint. Ebay and other auction sites let the market dicate the value of your item.

I get sick everytime I think about this!

I was in my mid teens at the time. Back around 1987 or 1988, I went to a local card shop and traded about $30 worth of baseball cards for a complete 1986 Fleer Basketball set. Michael Jordan was my favorite player, so I was very pleased even I there was no regular price guide for those cards then. I kept the set for a year or two and said that I would NEVER GET RID OF IT. Well, I kept waiting, and waiting, and waiting for a price guide to come out on them, and it never happened. In the mean time, my uncle called me and asked me if I would trade the set for a "WHOLE BUNCH OF BASEBALL CARDS." I finally broke down and told him yes. About a month later, the first basketball Beckett came out.

I've been crying ever since! image

You can buy that back easily. image Many guys routinely are willing to trade at least half their worldly possessions to get that back.

7 years ago I sold the following at a Tri Star Show in Kansas city to finance my "wife to be's"engagement ring.

    2 Jordan RC's
    64,66,67 Mantles
    2-54,57,60,61,62,64,68,69 Mays
    57,48,60,63,64,67 Aaron
    57 Ted Williams
    2-54 Banks
    60,61,63,66 69 Clemente
    64,65 66 Rose
    53 Stachell Paige.

All were ungraded but in very high end condition. (probably many psa-7-8 and maybe even a 9 or two. I was offered (and accepted) $7800 for the above including another 50-60 commons from 1953-54 (no high numbers or anything unusual)

I would hate to think if I would have had all of these graded what there value would be worth today. But I think I will keep my wife instead.......
