British Copper Opinion wanted ( Large Images )

I just bought this and when I got home I found Spinks lists it at £35 in EF and £175 in UNC. What do you guys think this grades and should go for?

Don't know much about it as I'm "uber new" to darkside but I do know that I really like the toning around the lighthouse! Nice coin image
  • I think you should send it to me.image

    Hi Bill-

From the photo, it looks to be choice uncirculated (US grading = MS-63). I do see some field hits and minor hairlines (but those could be die polish lines and its difficult to tell from the photo). Color looks nice as well. Since you listed the Spinks price for EF, do we assume that you bought it at that level? If so . . . well done!

It could easily be a 63 - would love to see her in person!

I ran a comparison with some of my pieces of the same type 1883-1894. It has a very nice strike, especially on the reverse. It definitely has more than just a shot at MS grade - much better than EF. It's probably worth £50-£75 since it's not full red (Spink UNC prices are for full red examples).

    Fabulous find, cosmic!

I see the hairlines too and I can't tell if they're die polish lines or not, but maybe they're from cleaning. Did you check that out, Cosmic?

I wonder if Wybrit would consider this uncirculated? It looks close. Uncirculated or not, I think you got a good deal.

  • Looks to me to be a solid 63 possible slide into 64. Did the gent you picked it up from get nervous when you pulled your bandanna up across your nose and started talking "texican" image
