???

Which ...LEAST... bothers you?

  • Hi topstuf, I voted "other" because that includes tooled which bugs me most. How many other "others" are there, anyway? Just curious....

    Whizzed, Cleaned.
I don't mind scratches on an older coin.
  • I guess there's a stigma attached to any coin that is net graded, but I dislike corrosion the most.

I don't like "polished" or "ex-jewelry" at all.

don't mind lightly cleaned if the coin has unc details, don't mind lightly corroded on 180+ year old copper.

don't mind light scratches (test marks, not grafitti) on 180+ year old silver.

Whizzed. I actually PREFER net-graded coins when they're ex-jewelry or holed.
  • A light cleaning may not affect me in some cases, rim damage isn't a big factor either. If the AT is horrible, it can be dipped, otherwise, it just adds some interest to the coin, but corrosion is something that can never be fixed and permenantly damages a coin. It also gives some of the worst eye appeal, definitly the one i hate the most...

I picked "whizzed", but would include tooled in there as well.

Many of the others are the result of natural forces, (although some manmade, i.e. jewlery), but are unintenional as far as collector value. But whizzed and tooled are intentional attempts to mislead.

    Whizzed or polished, IMO.

When it comes to bust halves, I think I hate polishing and scratching almost equally...... pisses me off...... image

A polished coin just looks sooooo bad. Almost as if it's play money.

Most of the other problems are not noticable at first glance. Some of them are down right difficult to detect (rim damage).

  • How could you dislike AT over whizzing?

    For me it's between Ex-jewelry & whizzed.

    Jeremy,
    That '29 dime is hilarious !! I'm surprised a bidding war didn't break-out in this thread !!!
    That is one funny slab.......

  • If you add polished to whizzed that's my answer. When I find a rare small gold coin in jewelry, I'm sort of proud to have saved it in a way--and stick a bullion coin in it's place. Feel the same giving a good wholesome dip to AT garbage.
