Newbie question on cleaned/dipped on BUFFALO??

SNMANSNMAN Posts: 1,404 ✭✭✭
I am learning about cleaned and dipped, can anyone tell me if this has been cleaned/dipped or both?
What does dipping mean? (hope I am not asking secret stuff) will PCGS accept these cleaned/dipped coins?

thanks,

snman

No don't spend any money trying to get it certified. To make it worth while while it would have to be MS66+ or the three leg variety. Your coin looks damaged. mike

  • I agree don't waste your money PCGS would probably send it back. I'm almost sure dipping simply means dipping the coin in a cleaning solutions. To look at some nice Buffalo and what's worth the trouble go to the Heritage site and surf around the Archives section. www.heritagecoin.com. It's free. I just got a 1913 D from them and it's beautiful bid on it and got it for a good price.

thanks, I was not planning on sending it. I just wanted to learned how to spot a cleaned coin; that's all. sometimes I can't tell if it is toned vs cleaned. that is why I think this forum is great for vets (literally in your case-thank you) to pass on info to newbies like myself.

by the way, is JOPA going to retire? go lions!!

I don't know if it is your camera, but they look funny. They are an even light grey and look slightly grainy. Sometimes buffaloes are acid etched/dipped giving them a grainy surface. Lightly circulated ones will have some toning and darker areas against the lettering and devices. These appear to be AU (almost uncirculated) but have no luster or die flow lines. Think of the coin as having a skin. It has been removed leaving a grainy damaged surface.

The coins are porus which is the equivalent to saying they are corroded. The corrosion has been cleaned off leaving the coins leaving them as they now are.

Dipping is different then cleaning. Dipping means the coin was dipped in jewlery cleaner (or similair product) and only the surface dirt/prints are removed. Cleaning leaves marks on the coins which vary in their nature.

PCGS will not slab cleaned coins, they will slab properly dipped coins. Properly dipped coins can not be differentiated from non dipped coins.
