What's the story with all the 1887 Seated Dimes???

TommyTypeTommyType Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭✭✭
If you do a search on Heritage, there is probably a dozen uncirculated 1887 Seated Dimes....Mostly MS-64 and MS-65. Did I miss the story behind these?

Did someone find a roll of the things?
An old hoard broken up?
Did they get beamed in from Mars?
Or have they always been super common? The price guides don't seem to indicate they are any more common than preceeding or succeeding dates.

Probably a story known to just a few.....

Added: Not trusting my memory, I just checked again. There's actually more than 2 dozen.....

  • I don't know but was wondering the same thing. It started about 6 weeks ago. Every auction, of every type that Hertiage puts on has 5 or so in 64/65, plus on the fixed buy area, there are 8 or 10 more.

Yeah....I've been eyeing them for the last couple weeks. With that many available, I'd probably be a buyer of a 64 at $250-$275. But they're holding the prices over $300-$315 with the reserves. I keep thinking if I wait long enough......

I have to admit I went in for one of them.

Can't say I blame you! Trends puts the MS-64 at $600 retail, (yeah...I know), and CDN puts the type at $315 bid. If you ever wanted an uncirc seated dime, now is probably the time!

They still had a few after auction lots at $315. ALthough I think (hope!!) I snagged the best one of that bunch.
