Personally, I find it pretty tough even with a good loop!

There used to be some links in old threads with photos. I searched, and the ones I found all had non-working links. If you serach on SBA type you find several threads with descriptions at least.

1981-S Type I has rounded S; Type II has flatter/fatter S, according to the Red Book.

  • Thank you very much Kidd.

  • no problem, a little more info is if you find a 79 clear s = type 2, compare it to the 81 it will match the type 1 for that year79 type 2 and 81 type 1 used the same s mintmark design.

  • smed -- not sure where you got that pic of a 81 Type II -- but that looks more like a one to me.

Actually 81 Type IIs are quite easier to find once you have it down. I cherry these coins all the time from dealers. So far I have 2 complete sets I have assembled for about $20 a piece and have started another 4. Also keep in mind there's what I refer to as a Type III that isn't recognized, but is confused with the type IIs often. I think the pic posted is a type III.

Most dealers get them confused. My best advice is to buy a PCGS/NGC certified example and study it -- with and without a loop and you'll be able to spot them easily.

Here's a true Type II -- see how it's flatter and more bulbous on the serifs??
