What does a cracked-open slab look like?

PSA slabs are "tamper-evident", but what exactly does that mean? What does a slab look like after its been cracked open? The reason I'm asking is that I recently bought a card and the slab has 3 small spots (about 1/4 inch each) near the edges (1 on the bottom and 2 on the right side) that appear cloudy. The condition of the card doesn't seem to match the grade (9), and my gut feeling is that the slab was opened and the card replaced with a lower condition card. Does the entire slab edge get cloudy when opened?

Any help is appreciated,

Chad

In my experience it tends to vary. Sometimes the whole edge turns cloudy and somtimes it is just a little cloudy. It is hard to tell if it is on a white surface. Set it on a black surface next to a non tampered case and look closely.

Post a scan if you want better opinions. It would be very difficult for anyone to open a holder partially, pull the card out, stick a new one in, and then reseal the holder to the point that it appears unopened. The holders cloud completely around the seal when opened at the seal. I have several holders that have that type of clouding you mentioned in a couple areas around the edges, but it has been caused from being jostled around, likely during shipping.
  • Chad- i had a similar thing happen to me. I bought a card on eBay and the holder looked "suspicious", as if someone may have tampered with it, and possibly switched cards. I immediately contacted the seller, and we agreed that i would send the card to PSA (to the attention of Joe Orlando, the head honcho there), and ask them to review and RE-SLAB the card. This i did, and the card came back just fine--in a new slab. It was worth the effort for the peace of mind of knowing the card was genuine.
    Good luck!
