Opinion Poll: How many PSA 9's would you have to resubmit to get a PSA 10?

I have a group of about fifty of the same card, all graded PSA 9 with no qualifiers. The card is a mid-80's Topps card. Assuming money is no object (yeah right), what do you think would be the results if I sent them all in for regrading, either in the holders or after breaking them out. Do you think I would get a PSA 10 (there are currently zero PSA 10's in the Population Report). How many PSA 8's? I know this is a question with a ton of room for more detail, but I just wanted opinions from the board members. Answer however you may and thanks for the thoughts!
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

Just a guess, but I'd say two 10's, thirty-one 9's, twelve 8's, four 7's and a 4 thanks to someone at PSA mauling the card somewhere in the process.

I'm currently conducting a smaller version of this version question. I'll report back in a while.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

i always felt the "10" is kinda of over rated.

I consider Mint 9 to be the best example for your money.

I understand the mentality of paying 10X more for a 9 than an 8, but i just dont see myself paying more than 3X for a PSA 10.

If you sent in all 50 still holdered, you will get back 50 9's. Crack them, and maybe a 10 or two sneaks in there.

  • Well, I would bet money you wouldn't get 50 9s. The real interesting thing to do would be to have say... a huge PSA authorized dealer send in the 50 for you. Hey, it can't hurt... Or really eat the shipping and send in 6 subissions of 8 or so each, then the grader may be more likely to give you one 10 out of each submission. I think this is most likely to get the most 10's, because I seriously doubt you could get 6 10s out of one large submission. Another thought would be to slip a 20 behind one of the cards for the grader... Anybody try that yet?

I could not possibly agree with you more! I've seen enough 9's that should be 10's and 10's that should be 9's to know that a 10 is really just way overrated. I mean really, MINT is supposed to be the best you can get anyway. Of course, if you're a dealer, it's different. story. But for collectors, get yourself a nice 9 and forget about spending a fortune on a '10'.

  • If they're all Permagraphics cards, I'd expect to get 50 - NO HOLDER AVAILABLE's if they were graded the first time around. In my experience, PSA only grades these about 50% of the time, with no explanation as to why! image

Let's just say we have a significant difference of opinion.

Funny, I would say that the 4 was due to putting that particular card under a high-powered microscope.
  • The question is very broad. It would depend entirely on how nice the cards are. I have cracked, to date, six 8's that I felt hosed on and have re-submitted them for 10's. That's a TWO GRADE increase. The fact is that 5 of those 6 cards are nice MINT examples, while the other was clearly perfect all the while. The scary thing is I've only cracked two dozen cards TOTAL in my submission history. Of those 24 cards exactly four have come back with the same grade. Here's my re-sub breakdown...

    23 PSA NM/MT 8's became

    6 PSA 10
    12 PSA 9
    1 PSA 9pd
    4 PSA 8

    1 PSA NM 7 became

    1 PSA 8

I also have many PSA 8's that are accurately assessed that I wouldn't bother trying. You see, it all depends on how nice the card is. If this is just a wild guessing game however, I'm in...
    50 cards PSA 9

    11 PSA 10
    32 PSA 9
    7 Other

I'd be content with the 9's. Even if you got a few 10's out of the batch, you wouldn't be too happy if 20 of them came back 8's.

Send 'em all to PRO; you'll get all 10's that way. Except they won't fit in their holder, being untrimmed. image

With a group of 50 nines you should be able to discern the 10 best and resubmit those. This limits your exposure to receiving 8s and would likely yield the same amount of 10s as resubmitting the whole batch. Pick the cards that are 50/50 with no chipping on the edges.
