New Purchase: 1821 Bust Half in AU

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,626 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just purchased a really nice 1821 Bust half. Anyway, I won't reveal the Overton variety, but as a hint, it's a little bit scarcer one (R3 or so). This particular coin is a bit dull due to a hazy patina, but it has exceptionally abrasion-free surfaces and a nice strike. Should I send it to PCGS?

    I love bust halves...

    Congrats.
  • Should I send it to PCGS?

    Yep!
  • I guess the question is... why would you send it to PCGS? Are you working on a Registry Set? Are you selling the coin? Do you want it for the assurance of grade, authenticity, and problemfreeness?

And then the question, is $30 + shipping (Cause I'm pretty sure this coin is too much to send economy image) worth acheiving this, when for most cases, there are cheaper alternatives... such as, showing the coin to several dealers and Bust specialists at a local show to confirm grade, authenticity, problemfreeness (I love this word now image) and even variety. For protection of the coin, how bout an Intercept Shield holder? Or a Coin World Slab?

Ron: That's a very beautiful and original looking Capped Bust Half. Congratulations on acquiring a very nice coin with tons of eye appeal!!

Although I am not an Overton specialist, I did notice that the "A" in States appears to have been only partially struck up probably due to a filled die...

The stars are very well-struck exhibiting strong radial lines. image

Beautiful coin! Anacs would be a good choice if you wanted to have it graded, plus they will attribute the Overton number on the holder.

I'm actually not thinking about submitting this one to PCGS or ANACSbecause it's not for sale, and it's included in my (95% raw) collection. I was just curious to see what everyone thought about it.

Now that I know you all like it, I'll tell you that I got it from James at EarlyUS.com for a reasonable price.
