Small Hoard of Key Date Barber Quarters

Goose3 just reminded me of a group of Barber Quarters that came up to my table at Baltimore and suggested I share the story with the forum (which I will). A fellow had a full PCGS box of 1913-S quarters and another full box of 1896-S quarters. There were 20 or so of each in PCGS, NGC and ANACS holders grading from AG to VF. He said he was obligated to offer them to two other dealers first and wanted to know if I might be interested if they passed. Of course, I said I would be. However, he didn't come back so guess he sold them to one of the other two dealers. As an afterthought, I asked where the 1901-S quarters were and he said he had 8 of them but had already sold them. It had taken him a while to put together his little hoard and he now decided he wanted to pursue some different (but still numismatic).

    Amazing....

Too bad he didn't have a stack of F, VF, and XF 01-S quarters....had I seen something like that, I would have probably passed out.

    Thx for sharing -

    Wayne,

I think I know where those (or at least part of them) went!

check out JJTeaparty's website! They listed a BUNCH of the key date barber quarters!

I would have liked to have just been there to see those boxes!

Looks like that is where the 01-S's ended up as well.

I wouldn't mind picking up a nice AG3 01s but that one on there sure is a dog.

I remember seeing a perfectly toned 1913-S Barber quarter on Ebay a few years back. It was graded by ANACS as F15, and was conservative at that. The starting price was listed at $1495 and the coin didn't even sell. JJteaparty coins have a NGC VG10 they are asking $3,000 for, and a PCGS VG10 at $3250 ask. Did I miss something here? Where are all the Barber quarter collectors coming from?

I don't know, but I'm glad I have all three of those keys already.

    Tyler –

Good question, i.e. “Where are all the Barber quarter collectors coming from?”

I actually purchased my PCGS VF-20 1896-S example from Teaparty about six years ago. Paid $1000 even. Seemed high at the time.

They now list an NGC VG-8 example for $1,075.

    Hmmm.....

I sold my Barber Q set last year, and the keys more recently. They doubled in price in about 2 years!

Just for this reason alone (2x the price in 2 years) I am reluctantly content to stay key-date Barber free. Alas!
