What Cards Have Gone Way Up and Are Now Worthless?

1986 Donruss Jose Canseco comes to mind. Didn't it get up to $100 in the late 80's?

I immediately thought of Hershiser and Strawberry rookies; Ron Kittle traded rookies, Gooden rookies - but they were all up in the $20 range.

    Yup,

That one, along with the '84 Donruss Mattingly, '83 Topps Traded Strawberry and '84 Topps Traded Gooden all immediately come to mind as having been well over $100 each in the mid-1980s.

Edited to add the '85 Topps Eric Davis and '81 Topps Joe Charboneau

I didn't realize that the Mattingly, Strawberry, and Gooden cards got over $100! WOW! The Mattingly is still around $15 to $40 range, but the Strawberry and Gooden cards can be had for nothing! Unbelievable!

I can remember the 1989 Upper Deck Jim Abbott rookies when they first came out in the extended series going for upwards of $20. The Nolan Ryan card with him throwing the football was selling in that vicinity also at that time.

The entire 1984 Donruss set was wildly popular in the late 80's, with the big rookies of Mattingly, Strawberry & Carter, along with second year of Boggs, Gwynn and Sandberg... and the prices on some of them seemed like they were jacked up pretty high if I can recall.

Heck, I can remember when Kevin Mitchell got hot one season, his popularity aided by the bare-handed catch he made on a fly ball, and his 87 Topps cards went from commons to $5 practically overnight.

And I remember in the late 80's when Lee Smith was making headlines, Jeff Reardon's '81 cards took off. That '81 traded card was selling for around $10.

Yea...especially during 1986 when the Mets won the World Series and Strawberry was the biggest hitter in BB (everyone considered him a lock for 500 homeruns) and Gooden was considered the next GREAT pitcher.

As was posted in another thread, the '84 Donruss Mattingly was really the card that launched the RC craze in the 1980s, and everyone was looking for it since the '84 Donruss set was supposedly harder to get, and Mattingly was supposed to be the Yankees next Superstar and take them back to the World Series. The Mattingly was also probably the most reprinted card around in the '80s, along with the Rose RC.

Anybody remember the Bo Jackson black and white card with the bat on his shoulders and him in the football gear. Am I mistaken or didn't that get up farily high. Not sure.

That Bo B & W card, I believe, was the most popular of his cards, along with his '87 Topps baseball and '88 Topps football RCs. I think it was in the '89 Score set, which again, was supposedly a shorter print run than most of the other sets of that year.

I bought a ton of Will Clark rookies in probably 1990 or so for a buck a piece. The Fleer went to $35 for a while and I sold a bunch. I think I got $15 or so when I sold to a dealer. Bought myself a new pair of Air Jordans. Great deal!

(edited to say) Of course, they're back down to a buck, now. Wonder where those Jordans are?

One of the best stories of the player that never was: Brien Taylor - pitcher for the yanks - first round draft pick - #6 in the 1992T set with an auto card in the "gold" edition factory set that cost more than a used 86 Ford and the guy never played in the majors to my knowledge. His 92T RC was going for as much as 5-6 bucks and those gold cards parallels for about a million dollars and that's all I heard about.
Then a bar fight, injury and no arm. The rest is history.
I did not have a stack of these.

The Canseco was once $135. I remeber Fred McGriffs rookie was around $40. McGwire isn't worthless yet but considering he was once selling over $300 it is now pretty worthless in comparison. I think the Bo card you are talking about is the Classic Green card.Terell Davis Select Certified was once selling for $100+ and booked at $135 now it can be bought for $1 on ebay. The Mirror Gold once brought HUGE money and is now maybe $15 or less.
  • I nominate Jerome Walton of the Cubs impossible to find upper deck RC from 1990 i think it was. I remember seeing that card for $10. Another fine Cubs bust! Don't forget Ben McDonald, Todd VanPopple, the Dale Murphy UD reverse negative, the Billy Ripkin F*@K Face controversy, ummm... Pretty much anything from what? 76 to present regular issues are hurting. There are a few exceptions to the rule, but unless its PSA 9-10, 99% of it isn't worth the grading fee. Pretty sad, overproduction that is... I have all 3 don/fleer/topps sets from 88-91. anybody want them?! Depressing!!! broke open my childhood boxes from storage and found a sealed 88 donruss cello with canseco on the front, score packs with the jefferies RC on the back, ooohhhh and tons of loose stuff from 87-91. I opened them up, no 88 donruss jefferies RC (damn!!) then chucked it in the junk pile. The only thing i can think of to do with is make some pretty flames in the fireplace this winter...

Anyone know what all the '81 Fleer and Donruss errors and variations are going for nowadays?

They were all rediculously expensive back in "the day"image

  • I still haven't seen the littlefield error from 81 fleer was it? Somebody post one! I'm thinking about just buying the 84 fleer update gooden, since i wanted that card soo long and soo bad but never got it. His numbers were so insane, but then again the appetite for coke was as well...

thats what i was going to mention.. i was a little kid, and i bought a dozen of them from a guy at the flea market for $4 bucks each, i was able to flip them at my school the next week for $10-$15 each.. heh.. i think i let my Griffeys go for $5 or $6 each at the time, and I had more of them than I did the Waltons..

another great seller from that set was Dwight Smith, the Nolan w/football (which is still a cool card, and I think it had a variation)

I think that was the only major set to feature Ozzie Canseco, and they were selling for a few bucks each..

I just went into the living room and Family Matters is on and who other than Larry Johnson is there!
His 91UD RC was pushing like 15$ or more along with Mutumbo for like 10$ or more - now you can have them for free! Like a buck?

That was actually in the '82 Fleer set. I have one that I bought in a Coach's Corner Auction last year for around $50. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner available to post a pic, but hopefully someone else will be able to.

An easy way to see one, of course, is to take the regular one and look at it's reflection in a mirrorimage

Wally Joyner, Ozzie Canseco, and Greg Swindell come to mind. I don't think their cards ever went very high, but they at least had some value.

Gooden was the big one, though. A lot of 30-something investors spent a ton on his cards and packed them away, hoping to fund their kids' education with them. Ouch.

You know, when you think about the BV to cost ratio for wax back then vs. now, it's no wonder the dealers are so much more solemn at shows these days.
  • Man it was all about Kevin Maas......
    CB4
  • The weird thing in the 80's about the value of singles vs cost of packs was such that I could go into the card shop and buy 5 87 donruss packs for 75 cents each, sell the singles out of it back to the store on the spot, then probably open 5 or more packs for free. Now you open them up, and if you don't get a rare subset, they may as well go in the trash. I've probably opened 50 packs or more of new stuff and still haven't gotten jack crap. And these packs are freaking $3 a pop. Now i just get powerball quick picks and buy vintage. Funny thing is, go check out a price guide from 86 or so, and see how insanely cheap the pre 53 cards are. The 34 goudey set is around 3,000 in mint condition and there is a 6.9 set on ebay for 41,500. The 52 mantle is 2900 in mint condition the whole set is 15,000 mint, and the 8 set sold recently for over a quarter million. I don't understand why anyone buys new stuff unless they are simply selling it immediately for a quick buck. Where will this will go????? "we'll see" Just remembered Cory Snyder was another huge bust and Danny Tartabul, as well as Bobby Bonilla... whom I liked better than Bonds back in the days.

I remember this shop i didn't like in my hometown who wanted to trade me my 71 topps willie mays (my first card ever! $8 i think it was) for a half box of unopened 88 score packs. glad i didn't take that deal, and i still have my willie image

John Vanbeisbrouk (spelling?) his rc card was around the 25-45 dollar range when he brought the Florida Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals....now can be bought for a couple bucks.
  • 1989 hoops & 1990 skybox baskets!
  • I thought Joe Charboneau and Ron Kittle were always credited with starting the rookie card craze, Mattingly just took it to another level.

That Bo Jackson card was eiter in the 1990 Score set. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50133&item=5145156268&rd=1

I remember as a 15 year old selling them for around 15 dollars each. I paid 50 dollars for my 1984 Donruss Strawberry rookie in 1990.

Before Mattingly, Charbonneau, and Kittle... THE rookie card was 1979 Topps Bob Horner... right from college to Atlanta, this guy was gonna be the next Eddie Matthews... as a kid, I remember that card costing $4 in 1979, or about the same price as a 1970 Roberto Clemente.

Couple other names from the past that dropped into the gutter... 1985 Topps or Fleer Eric Davis, 1983 Topps Frank Viola, 1981 Fleer Fernando Valenzuela, 1977 Topps Jack Clark, 1981 Topps or Donruss Tim Raines... today, take your pick for a buck.

I wouldn't toss the Tim Raines rookies too quickly. The guy absolutely belongs in the Hall of Fame, and his high end cards will get a little love when he's elected.

Back when Don Majkowski took the Packers to the playoffs, I bought all of his rookie cards that I could find. (Don Who? Yeah, I know.) Though the cards never went "way up," I certainly paid a lot more for them than they're worth now. That's about the time I stopped speculating on modern cards--but I wish I'd hung on a little longer and grabbed a few of Majkowski's successor.

  • I remember going to the card shop every week to buy a pack of '86 donruss,After Canseco reached the 40/40 club that card sky rocketed. The time I actually pulled a Canseco out of the pack right in front of the shop owner he offered me $60 for it.

A couple guys hit on it above... for me it was '81 Joe Charboneau and just before that '79 Bob Horner. I had about 20 of each. Also '79 Willie Wilson. I am 36 now so about 1981 I was in my prime card buying time of life. Too bad for me with all the crap at that time. If you remember also, the Ozzie Smith rookie didn't become a big deal to several years later.

  • I am waiting for the 81' sub sets to come back. sitting on many sticker books, scratch offs and 5x7 cards. oh and the burger king cards. with all these worthless early 80's cards being mentioned - did anyone stock up on the 82' ripken rookies?
  • The Big Three in the Early to Late 90's: Ken Griffey, Frank Thomas and Juan Gonzalez. I bought an upper deck Juan Gonzalez rookie for like $20 in his MVP years...and Frank Thomas' Leaf Rookie was going for $80.

Basketball: Penny. Anfernee Hardaway. His cards are still at a decent price, but nowhere near what they were when he and shaq were winning games in orlando.

And who was that oakland raider quarterback who wowed folks for a season or two? Todd Marinovich? I was still a kid back then, but i remember his cards getting scooped like he was.....Ben Rothlisberger!

Good call on those '81 subsets as some of those (mini stickers especially) were hot back then but you forgot the K-mart set! Those were HOT HOT HOT when they first came out in '81 or 82? Now you can't give them away.

They were cold cold cold by then - the KMart sets were the first boxed subset issued to the hobby after the boom; everybody stockpiled them and they're worth less than the paper they're printed on. I picked up a boxful of them years ago for nothing; they were just thrown in on a collection I bought. I actually used to put them on my table at shows with a sign that said "Take Me, Please" and I still couldn't get rid of them.
