1986 Donruss Jose Canseco comes to mind. Didn't it get up to $100 in the late 80's?

That one, along with the '84 Donruss Mattingly, '83 Topps Traded Strawberry and '84 Topps Traded Gooden all immediately come to mind as having been well over $100 each in the mid-1980s.

Edited to add the '85 Topps Eric Davis and '81 Topps Joe Charboneau

The entire 1984 Donruss set was wildly popular in the late 80's, with the big rookies of Mattingly, Strawberry & Carter, along with second year of Boggs, Gwynn and Sandberg... and the prices on some of them seemed like they were jacked up pretty high if I can recall.
Heck, I can remember when Kevin Mitchell got hot one season, his popularity aided by the bare-handed catch he made on a fly ball, and his 87 Topps cards went from commons to $5 practically overnight.
And I remember in the late 80's when Lee Smith was making headlines, Jeff Reardon's '81 cards took off. That '81 traded card was selling for around $10.
As was posted in another thread, the '84 Donruss Mattingly was really the card that launched the RC craze in the 1980s, and everyone was looking for it since the '84 Donruss set was supposedly harder to get, and Mattingly was supposed to be the Yankees next Superstar and take them back to the World Series. The Mattingly was also probably the most reprinted card around in the '80s, along with the Rose RC.

(edited to say) Of course, they're back down to a buck, now. Wonder where those Jordans are?

Anything that I bought in 25ct lots or more in the early 90's!

Then a bar fight, injury and no arm. The rest is history.
I did not have a stack of these.

They were all rediculously expensive back in "the day"

<< <i>I nominate Jerome Walton of the Cubs impossible to find upper deck RC from 1990 i think it was. I remember seeing that card for $10.

thats what i was going to mention.. i was a little kid, and i bought a dozen of them from a guy at the flea market for $4 bucks each, i was able to flip them at my school the next week for $10-$15 each.. heh.. i think i let my Griffeys go for $5 or $6 each at the time, and I had more of them than I did the Waltons..
another great seller from that set was Dwight Smith, the Nolan w/football (which is still a cool card, and I think it had a variation)
I think that was the only major set to feature Ozzie Canseco, and they were selling for a few bucks each..
His 91UD RC was pushing like 15$ or more along with Mutumbo for like 10$ or more - now you can have them for free! Like a buck?

edit: change date
That was actually in the '82 Fleer set. I have one that I bought in a Coach's Corner Auction last year for around $50. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner available to post a pic, but hopefully someone else will be able to.
An easy way to see one, of course, is to take the regular one and look at it's reflection in a mirror

Gooden was the big one, though. A lot of 30-something investors spent a ton on his cards and packed them away, hoping to fund their kids' education with them. Ouch.
You know, when you think about the BV to cost ratio for wax back then vs. now, it's no wonder the dealers are so much more solemn at shows these days.

I remember this shop i didn't like in my hometown who wanted to trade me my 71 topps willie mays (my first card ever! $8 i think it was) for a half box of unopened 88 score packs. glad i didn't take that deal, and i still have my willie

John Vanbeisbrouk (spelling?) his rc card was around the 25-45 dollar range when he brought the Florida Panthers to the Stanley Cup Finals....now can be bought for a couple bucks.
That Bo Jackson card was eiter in the 1990 Score set. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50133&item=5145156268&rd=1
I remember as a 15 year old selling them for around 15 dollars each. I paid 50 dollars for my 1984 Donruss Strawberry rookie in 1990.
Couple other names from the past that dropped into the gutter... 1985 Topps or Fleer Eric Davis, 1983 Topps Frank Viola, 1981 Fleer Fernando Valenzuela, 1977 Topps Jack Clark, 1981 Topps or Donruss Tim Raines... today, take your pick for a buck.
<< <i>1981 Topps or Donruss Tim Raines... today, take your pick for a buck. >>
I wouldn't toss the Tim Raines rookies too quickly. The guy absolutely belongs in the Hall of Fame, and his high end cards will get a little love when he's elected.

Post '80s investment (not aesthetic) garbage, all of it!
Basketball: Penny. Anfernee Hardaway. His cards are still at a decent price, but nowhere near what they were when he and shaq were winning games in orlando.
And who was that oakland raider quarterback who wowed folks for a season or two? Todd Marinovich? I was still a kid back then, but i remember his cards getting scooped like he was.....Ben Rothlisberger!

Good call on those '81 subsets as some of those (mini stickers especially) were hot back then but you forgot the K-mart set! Those were HOT HOT HOT when they first came out in '81 or 82? Now you can't give them away.
Shane
Alonzo Mourning Magics All Rookie Team- paid $100, now worth 10 pennies. dammit!
Heath Shuler rookies- i passed up Faulk to invest in Shuler. whoops
<< <i>KMart cards were hot? I didn't start collecting cards until 1983 when I was 8 yrs old. I definitely don't remember that! >>
They were cold cold cold by then - the KMart sets were the first boxed subset issued to the hobby after the boom; everybody stockpiled them and they're worth less than the paper they're printed on. I picked up a boxful of them years ago for nothing; they were just thrown in on a collection I bought. I actually used to put them on my table at shows with a sign that said "Take Me, Please" and I still couldn't get rid of them.

I'll trade 'em for my stack of Gregg Jefferies cards. Was there ever a player with more hype than him?
