Did I cherrypick this Washington?

imageimage

Bought this off of eBay from a forum member. Nice coin, and I bought it for the eye appeal which I like. Question though, does anybody else see doubling on the motto or am I crazy? Lighting, maybe? I don't have any of the guides for the Washington series, are any varieties known for this date?

(EDIT: Have the coin in-hand, and yes definitely it was an imaging artifact.)

That's what I figured judging from the shadows on the left edge of the portrait.
  • Wexler and Flynn's "The Best of the Doubled Die Varities" for Washington quarters does not list a DD obverse or reverse for 1955. Neither does the www.conecaonline.org, the variety collectors bible. That is one nice looking quarter though!
We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

I look at a LOT of quarters everyday and can you believe, this is still like uncharted waters? I have seen quite a few pieces that exhibit very strong doubling on both the Obverse mottos and reverses.
  • I recall Spadone making a passing referance to this years ago, late 70s, if you can get a copy of his variety book, an excellent work.
