Grade the 10 Franc Gold :)

Since I am new to this...as you all are painfully aware of by now lol...I really have no idea how to grade Darkside gold. What to look for in terms of wear vs. strike and so forth. What do you all think of this coin as far as grade and condition and what key points of these coins does one watch for signs of wear? Thank you again image

I like the color and it should go MS... probably 62. There looks as if there could be slight friction on the high points on the obverse, but the coin probably was in a roll at some point.

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

  • I tend to agree - MS62/63 range - beautiful coin! image
  • I'll make it unanimous image

I don't have a clue about these coins, but I'm going to stick my neck out and call it EF (British EF) because of the darkness in the hair above and to the right of the ear. Trick of the light, perhaps?

I would think you would want to check the areas highlighted below for wear as they seem to be the high points.

Well, one can't really grade an image...but, the dead king is pretty much right on target.

Your image looks like a scan; correct? The darkness in the braid area makes me tend to think it has slight wear. The amount of hairlining would be the determinate factor to separate outright rub from a typical slightly baggy unc. coin, and of course, the lustre, and fullness of such.

That said, I would tend towards AU58 (but, it could go as high as maybe MS62) because of the look of the braid and cheek. Again, scanned images tend to appear worse (flatter and lacking lustre that is really there) than the actual coin as Wybrit's "re-imaging" series have shown.

Here's a 20 franc (1911) I posted previously to your other thread on World Gold for comparison. This image is a digipic and is graded MS65 by PCGS. It's actually a high-end 65 with the reverse holding it back from 66. This obverse is a solid 66 for surfaces and lustre.

I can definitely see the difference between those two coins. I'm learning...albeit slowly...but learning image
