guys dosn't want insurance on $1,425 item? ? Paid through PayPal...

This guy buys a card for $1,425 and then only pays for the $2.00 standard shipping. He paid with PayPal. I emailed and told him that I highly recomend insurance. Should I buy delivery confrimation on my own to cover myself through PayPal? What should I do?

I would not take any chances, I'd pay the extra postage and send it registered with restricted delivery and return receipt. It'll cost you around $15, but will eliminate any possible problems. Plus, you can send it pretty securely registered without insurance.

Definitely. Also buy the insurance for yourself on an item like this. I was doing "delivery confirmations" even before PayPal mandated it - never have had a problem with anyone claiming "they didn't receive it."

As a seller in the auction I would have made shipping more. And stated INS madatory. Problem solved.

The poor guy's budget must have been not a penny over $1,427.00....image

Absolutely, register the puppy. If you send it regular mail, all a scamming buyer has to do is tell PayPal he never rec'd the item. If you can't provide proof of shipping; say bye bye to $1,427.00. That's the sad truth about PayPal.

100% yes. Register it, DC it, do something to protect yourself. Pay the few bucks, you'll be glad you did.

So sending registered with signature conf and return reciept should cover me. I never thought someone would buy such a high ticket item and not insure it. He buys and sells lots of high end items. Here is his shipping policy on his listings
"Shipping is $2 to the U.S. and $6 for global priority…. If you want insurance, it is at your expense…. "

I am going to go with registered mail and signature conf. that way I am covered. I hate to have to pay the extra money just because he is not taking responsibility himself. I guess it is better to pay now than pay big later.

If you want to be covered by Paypal's Seller Protection Policy, you have to use delivery confirmation (or signature confirmation if the item is over $250).

Also, insurance actually protects you and not the buyer. It is generally held to be your responsibility to get the item to the buyer, regardless of whether he pays for insurance or not.

I would do signature confirmation at a minimum. my private insurance covers me as long as I have it sent signature confirmation. you may want to just pay the registered for $10 to avoid any aggrivation. in the future always require insurance on items over $500 as the buyer won't even question it and usually won't factor it into their bid and just pay it when they make the payment.

Everyone has pretty much covered this...some people play the %'s and think postal insurance is sucker money for the PO...I don't...I can't believe anyone would buy something for 1500$ and not pay 1% to insure it...heck, the odds are that they are not paying sales tax!

Also, congratulations! That's a great sale and a super item!

I emailed him and asked if he was sure that he wanted to pass on insuring the itme. His response:

I typically never insure on smaller value items... But I do appreciate your concern... LMK when the item has been mailed... I have always had good success with the better sellers like you, so I am not worried...

I am going to spring the extra $10 to register it and make sure I am covered.
  • I buy many expensive cards and lots and I do not want insurance. It is a chance that I am willing to make b/c when something is insured, I must drive to the post office (1.5 hours away) to pick it up.
  • Be sure you are shipping to a confirmed address as well, I would defintly go ahead and insure it as well as send it signature confirmed. Registered mail can be slower, but still may be worth the cost. I am a strong believer in that it is the sellers responsibility to ensure the item gets to the buyer, since in the eyes of the law if he can prove he paid and you cannot prove delivery then you can be held legally responsible.

  • Can't you send it to your work? Or are you a lumberjack or something? His point is valid though. Someone sent me an item i won via ups with "signature confirmation" and i damn near had to drive god knows where to a warehouse to get it. Since we all know UPS essentially knocks and runs their ass off to get the hell out. I missed them and i was at home!! I'm waving in the street and he's off like a bandit. So yea on UPS, i never want sig confirmation, otherwise i have to miss 3 shipments then wait to pick it up. Pisses me off!!! My post office is half a mile away, so for insured packages with confirmation i actually prefer USPS. They leave one note then i go pick it up. simple. Luckily i live in a nice area, I recently won a multiple thousand dollar card through an auction house and fed ex just left it in the screen door... I'm still trying to figure out the best option.

Gee a $1425.00 dollar card considered a small value item, must be nice to have that kind of money.

PayPal requirement $250 and above requires Signature and tracking. I'll get a Signature Confirmation. If credit card was used keep the sig. confirmation receipt for 6 months or more. USPS takes it off their system after 6 months. With sig. confirm (pink) they keep a record of the person's signature.

This happen long time ago. I sold a graded card worth $1200. the buyer wants to backed out after he won. He was giving me a lot of excuse. I couldn't offer the card to the secong bidder anymore (won an auction of the same card that ended earlier). I was ready to file for NPB. After 5 days he paid me via Paypal using a credit card. Paid shipping with no insurance. I was lucky to have browse Paypal policy 2 days back and came across the shipping requirements to prevent chargebacks (since I've started to hear horrible stories about sellers being hit by CC chargebacks -- those usps online trackings (sig and del) wasn't popular then I think PO just came out with it 1-2 mo). I sent it via Priority Mail boxed with signature confirmation and notified him that a sig. is required for the package. That was the end of it.

  • Well I've had some expensive items (higher than $1425) labelled with lower values for customs...not sure if this guy is in the same boat. Basically if it's coming from the US to Canada you will get taxed on the item plus some other dumb charges they can think of.

Send it registered or airmail....that's what I ask for without any values on the package. If it's being shipped from the US to the US then this guy has issues...I'd insure it.

Does a paypal bank transfer work the same way as a paypal credit card paypal payment? as far as a charge back and needing proof of mailing the item.

If we don't require insurance, then we can't b*tch when they opt out. Well, we can, but it's our own fault.

The buyer probably knows insurance protects you, not him. If there's a problem, you file the claim and you get the money. He doesn't get any money if his shipment is lost or damaged, unless you give it to him -- or PayPal does.

So .... he figures since it's not required in the terms of the auction, if you want to insure yourself against liability, you can pay for it.

Just require insurance on expensive stuff. Or ship by registered mail and charge a corresponding shipping fee. On a $1400 card, registered is cheaper for the buyer than regular insurance anyway.
