Opinions wanted on this 1883-S Morgan (Cleaned?)

This is what he says in his auction.

One of the concerns we are addressing in this auction is the concern that bidders have with regards to cleaned coins. There is a difference with mint polished coins and cleaned coins. We will illustrate through the photos of the 1883-S DPML taken by the aforementioned photographer how distinctively different the mint polish lines are from cleaning. You will see in the photos that the mint-polish lines are visible without magnification and while the usual cleaning lines is visible only through magnification.

Has this coin been cleaned & is it DPML<sic>

Likely harshly cleaned, although the poor quality photo is quite unrevealing as far as detail is concerned, however I can see enough detail in the poor photo to cause me to feel that the coin has been harshly cleaned. It also appears to also have been circulated.

The 1883-S Morgan is quite rare in true DMPL designation and is uncommon in true PL.

I'd definitely pass on that one. It's obviously been cleaned, harshly cleaned.

Grab a coin, get out a brillo pad and clean it up. you will then know the meaning of cleaning and polishing.

  • Terrapin Will: to answer your question. Back in the 1950's thru 1970's , sleasy promoters took a drill with a fine wire brush on it and polished about uncirculated coins until they shined like Unc. prooflke of Proof rare coins. The unsuspecting public was used to seeing white coins coming out of mint bags all the way through the 1960's, so they thought these were nice coins to buy. There are many still around, especially the semi-rare dated ones like this---but uncertified. There are in fact polishing lines on early-stuck Morgans with prooflike surfaces, but these lines are in one direction, and are RAISED lines in the fields only NOT found (except rarely) on the raised devices. The devices, or pictures, are usually dull and very frosty looking on real DMPL's, not polished and shiney looking. Hope this helps.

TerrapinWill: The replies that you are receiving are trying to warn you to stay away from purchasing raw (uncertified) coins until you have acquired some grading skills, to help you avoid risking and potentially losing your entire investment in potentially improperly graded coins.

Based on your reply, we are assuming that you may be a newcomer when it comes to grading coins. The replies are intended to protect you from potentially getting burned...

    Finally!!

This seller was so unstable, makes me wonder what he will do next . . . . he seemed to want this to happen as his auctions became bolder and more outrageous each time (i.e. the fake slabs, references to yellow brain fluid, etc).
  • Are there any acceptable ways for coins to be cleaned, or polished.
