Unusual request from buyer

I recently sold a Barry Bonds card for $14.95. I received a paypal echeck payment that will clear in a few days. The request from the buyer is "(Could you PLEASE "throw-in" cheaper 1987 TOPPS BONDS#320 and some cheaper ALBERT PUJOLS,DEREK JETER cards for my (2) little grandchildren?) Thank you, R

Has anyone ever received a request to "throw in" some cheaper cards, especially of Bonds, Pujols, and Jeter? At first I was going to bend and crease an 1987 Bonds to throw in but then I thought, why should I? The person obviously has a card shop by the ebay name and would have sources for this stuff already.

I decided to only send the card purchase. Besides, he already left me positive feedback.

I think you did the right thing. Sounds like he was trying to scam you for more cards.
  • That's pretty ballsy. I think I'm going to start asking for extra cards with every
    purchase I make.

Yeah just think if he has a store and buys a lot and does this with every purchase. He is coming I guess he does this in a dishonest attempt to cut his costs. He figures he get a couple cards he can sell for a buck or two then he has less in the actual item. the sad part is he probably says he wants them for his grand kids but he probably sell them to kids at inflated prices.

I would say: "Sure, just "throw in" some extra cash for my grandkids!"

That's funny. But as a career salesperson, one motto I've always lived by is "If you don't ask the question, you won't know the answer. The buyer can always say no. If they say "no" what's the worst? Nothing ventured nothing gained. That guy had some stones.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
  • Nevertheless, it is inappropriate to lie. Now, I don't know whether this guy was lying, but it sure sounds like it.

  • Ahhh..the grandchildren yes quite clever, unfortunatley I don't suspect many people give into his requests.

Funny he would ask you to throw in the most expensive, most popular players.

I've never asked for a throw-in, but I've often asked if a seller has more cards like the one I've bought, or something similar. I buy a rare Frank Thomas insert, I usually ask if he has the base card, stuff like that. But I offer to pay, but for free.

  • Yup that's him.
I told that ***hole to go pound sand when he hit me up a couple of years ago.I told him since it looked like he owned a store from his user id that maybe he should let his kid open some of his own inventory instead of hitting me up for cards.
    Some people really are clueless!
  • why not shoot higher...i mean if you got balls that big why not ask to throw in a ruth or mantle.
  • I always include bonus (ahem) "cards" when shipping my item. I have a case of 1990 score magic motion trivia cards, and upper deck team holograms I shove in every pack. I just couldn't bring my self to throw them away, plus they kind of insulate the plastic slab from the mailman stepping on them!

Call me a grinch but asking for stuff like that has put some people on my "banned bidder list" One guy in particular even sent me an email when his package arrived without the extra "asked for freebies" how his kids were disappointed......

I do not want to deal with people asking for freebies. I some times throw in an extra or two, but c'mon....

  • I put extra cards in some of my orders. I do this on my own,no one asks me for them. This reminds me of when I worked in a card store in the late '80's. My boss would give extra packs to some of our better customers. Then after some time, they would expect it,used to drive my boss crazy. He liked to give customers gifts, he didn't want people to ask for them. I can't blame him.

I'm not surprised if a gift turns around and becomes an expectation from a kid...ya just have to stop them in their tracks...but an adult - now you got a problem...people in the US are developing a sense of entitlement that is perhaps unparalleled, IMO...you sell them a car and they expect a trip to Puerto Rico and free liposuction!
Well timed gifts, in business, are a fantastic "internal" marketing tool to "persuade" a customer/client to tell their friends...put in the hands of a mooch and you are stuck with an ahole from my experience.

  • I've dealt with that chowderhead twice. He was from NY (i believe) and wanted me to 'throw in' some Jeter and Soriano cards for his little boy, but yet he owns a card shop? So within the past 2 years, his 'little boy' has himself had kids (now he wants them for his grandkids)? His shop must not be doing to well if his inventory comes from handouts. Or maybe he needs to stop opening his inventory himself, and let his cousin's baby's momma's nephew's neighbor's sister's brother in-law have a crack at some cards. I hope this clown reads these boards also, you cheap azz bugger!!! E
  • I sold several bonds rcs to that buyer. I threw in some bonus cards (my standard practice as a seller)- basically low end inserts/#d cards. No star bonds/jeter/pujols/etc. I have had other buyers ask me to throw in cards but this guy’s request (i.e., specific, high $ players- and rcs!) struck me the wrong way- esp. w/an ebay id that implies he has a card shop. I do not mind when people ask (not something I would do, but to each their own), but beggars cannot be choosers.

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?
