Barry Bonds, absent from trading cards this year after opting out of the Major League Baseball Players Association licensing agreement, has signed a two-year deal with Topps to appear on cards beginning later this month.
Terms of the deal were not available, although it’s been speculated that the value is somewhere between $1-$2 million.
The deal gives Topps exclusive rights to produce Bonds cards, including autographed cards and game-used memorabilia cards, as well as allowing the company to use the seven-time MVP’s likeness on product packaging. Topps is wasting no time getting Bonds into their products; the company will include a regular Bonds card in 2004 Bowman Heritage, a product scheduled for release the week of Christmas.
Shortly after that release, a very limited amount of original Bowman cards of Bonds will be autographed and inserted into Bowman Sterling.
Topps will also offer a 2004 Topps Traded Bonds card through an exclusive hobby store promotion set to kick off sometime in the next few weeks. That card will be numbered as the last card in the 2004 Topps Traded set (card #T221).
