Gifts for a coin collector? Two Parts

Hey everybody,

I'm looking to get a few things relate: to coin collecting for my buddy in CA. He's definately not a novice, so a book like Coin Collecting for Dummies, won't work. I'd like to get a book or two and a good loupe. So two questions:

1. What are some good general books for an intermediate collector? Like cherrypicking guides, grading guides?

2. What's the best loupe to get?

I'm probably going to get him the PCGS grading book and then maybe something else.

Thanks for your help!

Get him a nice honest circ. barber dime or a shield nickel, or a seated dime in vf/xf in a flip, something he wouldn't get himself.
  • I'd do that, but he's been doing a lot of collecting for his type set and I don't know what he has now, since I haven't seen him for a couple months.

  • I saw some desk top lights with a built in magnifying glass at Sharper Image - very nice, about $50.00
  • I use a Bausch & Lomb Hastings Triplet 10x and it works great. They
    also come in other powers.
