newbie with questions on lincoln sets

Wow just got done reading: How do you know when the smart money is leaving the market?
What a discution!! Been reading this board for about 2 weeks and decided to join. I have just gotten back into collecting and have a few questions. I am working on lincoln cent sets (1909-1940, 1941-1967,
1968-&gtimage. I am going threw all my lincoln cents that I have been putting in a glass water cooler bottle for the last 8 years. Any help on what to look for such as DD etc. or colors/grades I should be looking for. The oldest shinny one I have found so far is a 1959-D but most are 69 or newer. All the wheaty's are brown. Should I clean the dirt off with soap and water or use something else like alchol, asciton etc?
Well that is enough of that just wanted to say hi and thanks for any help. Oh one more thing Has anyone seen a 1989-D DD.?

I wouldnt clean anything of numismatic value. As far as when you can tell when smart money is leaving the market, that would be when you see supply out pacing demand. If the top two set holders and a couple of other power players drop out, there will surely be some corrections in pop-top lincoln values. I wouldnt look for that to happen any time soon, though.

image to the forum. Sorting Lincolns is a lot of fun. Time consuming, but fun. Last winter I started going thru about 5 gallon of cents that had been saved since the early 70's. I bought a box of 100 cent coin tubes and set in sorting by date and m/m. As I sorted them I threw out anything damaged or had anything cruddy on it for rolling and taking to the bank. Most of them were Memorial cents, so I figurred I'd have no problem completing a couple nice looking brown Lincoln sets. Boy was I wrong about that. I was shocked at how few cents of 61, 62, & 63 P mint there were. The 70's S mint cents were scarce too, still haven't found a 71 S. Remember this started out as an experiment to see what could be found in hoards of Lincoln cents and turned into an ongoing project, still lots of fun though. I ran accross a few cents that were just like new and without spots and selected to place them in 2x2's for safe keeping.

Have fun and don't clean any coin. image

You really need to get some books before going through your cents to know what you should be looking for. The Red Book and The Cherry Pickers Guide would be a good start.

I look for the 72 dds, the 95 dds,and the 98,99,00 proof reverses. The last three are referred to as "wide AM"in the PCGS coin price guide.Have'nt found any yet.I have'nt seen any 89D dds either.

I would'nt suggest cleaning any coins.

  • Welcome! Good advice being given, make sure to learn the difference between machine, shelf-like doubling and the real thing at the outset, it will save you lots of time and effort as you look for double dies and rpm's. Every volume of Cherrypickers has a good discussion of this with explanations and pics.
