1962 Topps Civil War News

This card (#8) is one of the tougher 8s in this set; I know #80 is a tough one too. Can anybody add to the list? What do you know about this set?

Never got involved with this set...didn't they give you a piece of confederate money in the pack with the gum and cards?

  • There is a box of 36 unopened rack packs in the Mastro auction right now. That translates into 1,298 cards and 108 pieces of "confederate" money.

Its currently at $17,270 (or $13.31 per card)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Who knows what the end of auction flurry will bring to those cards.

Ive only seen a few cards here and there of the set, but could see why it would be popular especially with the Civil War group.

The artwork, of course, is vintage Norm Saunders. That rack case - is that the one with the moisture damage on the box?

High quality 8s and 9s sell for 3 figures - it's a tough set with lots of centering issues. I understand the narratives on the backs took some, shall we say, liberties in the name of entertaining the "kiddies".

  • Mark,

Yes, that box is the one with the water damage. But only one pack was affected by the water (of course that can be Mastro-ese). And they the one rack pack had split into the three separate pieces, but the three pieces are still entirely sealed.

Even the currency that comes with the cards have basic and master sets on the registry.

Ive only seen a couple of the cards in person. What type of liberties were taken with the narratives (stretch of history, watered down)?

    Thanks.
  • Hi Mark:

Based upon the number of cards graded the #11 card is probably the toughest to get. 33 graded, only (8) eights, and no 9's. Next is the #7 card ( Death At Sea ) 32 graded only 8-8's and no 9's.

I could never contact Cerny aka " HUGGY " so I have (8) extra 9's to trade. Look at my set on the Registry and email me if you have any I need and we can horse trade if you would like.

Also, nice buy on the ( 12 ) American Beauties the other night.
