So,
Many know that I am working on my birthyear set (proof and mint). 1968.
Trying to find nice coins from that year is NOT easy, nor cheap in higher levels for a few of them.
I bought the quarter from hottestcoins on ebay...I also returned it. Their pic hides things. To be fair, they were very willing to take the return (they offered...I didn't ask as I never got a reply from them when time was running out, so I bid and won anyway). So, that coin is on the way home to them...then, I see that Mnmcoin (Morris) has some 1968 coins up...
he always has NICE coins. One is the quarter I now need again. But, it is on a damn 10 day auction (I hate those and don't like to bid on them...on principal). But, it is Morris and he has some NICE coins (did I say that yet?)
So, I set up a snipe, forget about it and leave it.
Come home...find that I won. About the same price as I did the last one. About $25 below my max.
Sad part is that I was high bidder $60 less until some sniper (yes, I sniped too, but that is irrelevant for this story since I ended up winning) tried to win with just a couple of seconds left.
Durn fool cost me! (but, good for Morris).
Stop sniping my snipe!!!!
Madmarty.....is this what it feels like when Russ does it to you?

More like the other way around. He stalks me on eBay and takes all the good coins so I never get any.

-What principle causes you to hate 10-day auctions?
Man, you got it easy. You oughta try doing that in my birth year!!
My odometer just turned over half a century a little while back.

The 1966 SMS Kennedy in MS66CAM that brought over $100, (it's a $50 coin), helped. He also got strong money ($394) for an Accented Hair in PR67CAM that had two obvious spots on Kennedy's cheek.

<< <i>I may be in the minority, but I really detest sniping. I have was the high bidder on a 67 sms roosie in 66dcam awhile back. I was the high bidder by over $100 dollars till closing. With 30 seconds left I was still the high bidder by over $100. When it closes 30 seconds later, the winning bid was over $200 dollars higher than my high bid. I know it is legal, but it drives me crazy >>
Sniping is sniping and will always be there. What I do to combat snipers is the only thing I can, always bid my absolute max bid I am willing to pay when I place my bid.

You enter an amount you'd be happy to buy the coin at...
You win the coin......
And then you complain you bought it for too much money....

Yes, principle is better than my spelling
I have a large distaste for 10 day auctions because, as a buyer, I don't like waiting that long. I also don't like feeling that the seller is stringing things out so long. As a seller, I have used 3-5-7 day auctions. I don't want to run 10 day auctions when I sell either.
Also, for 10 day auctions, if I am borderline on the coin (really wanting it and maybe sniping it), I won't bid right away, or do a token bid. Then, I forget about the coin if it is early in the auction (I don't live on ebay like some). So, I have missed coins that I would like to have for more than they went for. Why didn't I bid more then? Because, with a 10 day auction, on "common" coins, if I put in a bid, I honor it. But, if the same (or say, better) coin came along that i want instead, I end up with both or lose the 2nd one (because I won't renege on the first one).
7 day auctions are the limit of what I 'peaceably' accept. I very very very seldom bid 10 day auctions. I did on Morris' for a couple of reasons:
1) I have bought from him before....he is honest and a good seller.
2) I wanted the coin
3) It coincided with right after (I think it was 3-4 days) I contacted hottestcoins for the return of the first...so, I wasn't going to be "without" the coin
Peaceman.....I am sorry I didn't use more emoticons for you. I am sorry you couldn't read the sarcasm in the post. I am not upset at winning at that price. I am upset that it wasn't a snipe that took out the top bidder by just 1 increment or so. To get about 45% price increase that late sucks. No sugarcoating it. Not as much fun as seeing a bid, or bids, and the snipe beating them by just an increment
Keets.....I have a price in mind, I have the disposable income to buy them, and there aren't that many available in the year I am buying. So, saying to wait is nice but does nothing for me. Tell me, in your wisdom, how much lower do you think the PR68DCAM (PCGS) Quarters will go and when?
Also, to say that I, or anyone else, should be selling now....I guess you think I am a seller? I sell dupes and very few at that. I think my sales on ebay are a total of about 6-8 auctions. Off ebay, probably about 4-5 coins/sets. I don't sell like some of you do.
But, I do buy what I like/want.
Do I think I was ripped off? No. Do I think I will get a nice coin from Morris? Yes. Is it worth the price? Yes, at the moment and what I was willing to pay.
Do I wish that the other sniper would have had a 2year old kid distracting him/her instead of putting in the snipe (whether in person or using a sniping program)? Damn straight I do. If I can save $60 off a $200 coin, then why wouldn't I want that?
Does it matter that my max was ~$230? No. And, it shouldn't matter.
And, Clackamas....you are right, I am glad Now, go get multiple MS66 or greater Jeffies and sell me some.

<< <i>I've gotten some really nice premium DCAM cook islands proof sets on ebay without marty competition lately... Maybe he's getting tired of the weenie coins. >>
He did finish his registry set and sell off some remaining Cook Islands proof sets.
I want a "Birthyear -100" set as well.....so, 1868 is what I need to go after.
Now, go look at certain coins from 1868

hey Bochiman
you seem to want to buy at a lower price and i was just offering a suggestion on how to do that. i don't really know when the prices on PCGS PR68DCAM 1968 Quarters are going to come down, i just think they will. you evidentally don't have the patience or the discipline to wait till whenever that is and that's neither good nor bad. when you express the conflict of the two pasted comments above it can be confusing. but if you think you'll trick me into a diatribe about a house divided, forget it!!!!
just remember, there's a MadMan from the Chicago area that probably buys 100-300 proof sets/month in the 1964-1973 date range and that's just one person. the pops will go up and the price will come down. how high and then how low along with how long is for someone else to answer, but this much i can tell you:
PCGS pop for 1968-S Washington Quarter graded PR68DCAM.
April 2000----31 with 10 higher.
April 2002----41 with 10 higher.
October 2002----44 with 10 higher.
April 2003----47 with 10 higher.
July 2003----58 with 17 higher.
October 2003----59 with 18 higher.
April 2004----62 with 19 higher!!!!!!!!!!!!
currently, 73 with 21 higher.
these stats should be self explanatory. the poulation of coins is growing and in a relatively short period of time---less than 5 years---the grade you seem interested in has doubled and is well on it's way to tripling while the next grade up has doubled in the same time. my hunch is that by this time next year the coin will be available in the same grade at a lower a price. heck, you could even quote me on that!!!!
maybe you should wait till then and buy the 69DCAM????
al h.
edit-----my prediction for December 2005 is 94 with 28 higher. remember, you heard it here first.
