Clemente rookie PSA 7 ... too easy?

OK, so I've been looking for a 1955 Clemente PSA 7 for a long time now for my HOF Rookies set. My raw one from back in the day is creased and would be lucky to grade 3. SMR for PSA 7 is $1900, but I've seen them go on eBay for as low as $1550 and dealers ask for as much as $2650.

Anyway, a dealer I've never dealt with before, Jeff's Sports had a PSA 7 on eBay this past week with an opening bid of $1495. I figured the high opening might discourage bidding, but it was an amount I was willing to pay, so I set a snipe. Whaddaya know, I was the only bidder. $405 less than SMR ... almost too easy. Was it just the high opening bid?

So before I blithely send off the money, anybody know this dealer? He has good feedback and a ton of stuff in his eBay store, though not a lot like this. Jeff, if you're a member here, no offense ... just being careful.

  • They are good people and have been in business in the Milwaukee area for many years. You should have no problems dealing with them.
It's very possible that they could be selling it as a consignment piece for a customer. The shop I work at also does it for customers when they don't have a lot of Ebay experience.

GUARANTEE you that the high opening bid got you the deal. I wonder why people don't realize that if you start your auctions low, that you get more interested bidders, and the auction goes much higher. Sounds like you got a pretty good deal. Congrats!

  • funny, i also had two bids on that mays rookie. Last time i looked, there were only like 5 bids (2 of which were mine) and 44 mins left....then out come the snipers!!!

Brian, thanks for the reference. I'll rest easier now sending the dough.

Frank, that's what I thought, re the high opening. I'm glad others agree. I got my NM '55 Roberto at last!

Steve and majordanby, sorry about Willie. I've been holding out for PSA 6, but those don't seem to go for SMR or less! Besides, this is a nice looking 5 and I do a lot of business in both directions with DSL. Hey, I wonder if it could get GAI 5.5 if I crossed it ...

Stone, I'm getting a PSA graded lump of coal for Christmas. God bless us, every one!

    JR...

You did good getting this particular Maysimage I've been looking for a PSA 5 to go with my PSA 5 Mantle RC and this Mays is by far the best 5 I've seen on ebay. Every other one I've seen has either been significantly OC (without getting the OC qualifier), or has had poor registration.

Congrats on both the Willie and the Robertoimage

I want your '51 Mantle. Earlier this year I sold my PSA 8oc Mantle rookie (for about the price of a 6) and I've regretted it ever since. That was before I started the HOF Rookies set.

Hey, didn't I give you a PSA 9 Kelloggs Winfield for less than the price of grading? I thought so. I'll be expecting that Mantle in my mailbox. Because it's our birthday, precious, and we wants it.
