There's an auction ending soon that doesn't include the "Mr. Marvel" on the auto. It'll be interesting to see the difference in hammer price for the two items.
That is pretty cool. Having the first "Mr. Marvel" on ebay may help you to do very well. I am 100% sure that yours is legit because I know you pulled it and you are a very honest seller, but I wouldn't be suprised to see some on ebay soon that have "Mr. Marvel" squeezed in under the auto- most likely in not quite matching ink or penmanship.
BWFan- That's a great card, but I think someone "played' with it before inserting it into packs. Notice the "A" in Stan's name. The top of the letter has a circle in the letter "A", while in the word "Marvel" the "A" has no circle but rather a downward line leading into the next letter. Also the letters "E" in "Lee" are essentially separate letters with loops at the top. The "E" in Marvel exhibits no loop (looks like a smudge) and flows from one letter to the next rather than being separate. A nice card, but it raises a few flags to me. But hey, it's certified from the pack, so it's got to be real.
After looking at it closer, I tend to think it may have been played with too, the penmanship on the "Mr Marvel" does not look the same as that of Stan Lee's. I have also heard Stan Lee refered to as Mr. Marvel, but never seen him call himself that.
Nevertheless it did come from a pack that way and is still a great card.
I think it's legit for these two reasons.First of all every other one that sold or has been up for auction has had the auto pretty much centered on the sticker that was put on the card. This one was signed more towards the top so that he could fit the "Mr.Marvel" under his name. The second reason is that Donruss/Playoff has been know to have players sign their name with different variations so I think they may have done the same with this one. My feedback speaks for itself so if there is an issue it's on the companies end.
Brian Nice pull! This card looks legit to me...the second e in Lee and the e in Marvel have similar stroke angles and flow. Plus, if you say you pulled it, that's good enough for me. Good luck! your friend Mike
bwfan- Your reputation is beyond reproach That's not an issue at all. My initial reaction was "Great Card!", but the 2 sigs looked slightly different. Upon closer inspection and showing the scan to a few non-collecting co-workers, they thought the same thing too. Either these are cut signatures and someone added the "Mr. Marvel" after the fact and than the 2 sigs were centered when creating the card OR it is a limited legit sig. I know my signature differs slightly from my normal handwriting. (Actually, whenever I leave a note for my wife, she calls me immediately upon reading it. My handwriting is so bad she says it looks like I wrote the note in the middle of a stroke) Anyway, good luck with your auction. Try posting it on some comic boards too for further exposure
Thanks for the kind words Fab. This is actually not a cut auto but is signed on what has been refered to as a "silver band-aid" type sticker. Don't really see how they would be joined together as the sticker has no seam in the middle. I'm going to call Playoff/Donruss tomorrow and see if they have an answer for me.
Well I talked to someone at Donruss and they do indeed ask players and celebrities to sign their name with different variations so it looks like it's legit!
I was just about to ask if you had heard anything els on.. I was never intended to make is seem you did that to the card, I was thinking maybe an employee of Donruss had done it.. Sorry if I made it seem like that. Great Pull and good luck
No problem.I never took it as an attack on my character.I was excited when I got it because I never saw one signed that way but it was a little added security to know it's legit and something that Donruss does.
Are all the Fans of the Game cards supposed to have autographs? I pulled an Emilio Estavez Fan of the Game card without an autograph.....worth anything?
